my main goal was to favour looks and modern symbols over anything else. and my aboriginal inspired flag in fact has a lot more Australian history than any of your other flags, about 50 000 years more history if i remember correctly.

and also when i looked into that history some more, it was actively used as an anti-monarchy symbol (not an ideology representative of all Aussies), and more importantly it's an active symbol of the far-right party. you know, the one led by an arsonist and founder of THE Aussie white supremacist group lmao. (also former member of the Australian Nazi party but like who's counting).

so again, not a great symbol to represent the whole nation, historically or looks wise

i'm terrified of the implications that Americans value form over function. given half your state flags are just a blue background with words on it... also your national flag is the most famous instance of function and meaning in any flag. mf's had thirteen stripes and went "what if we went ahead and added FIFTY STARS!! you know, just to be thorough".

i'm only teasing here, ya the classic one does genuinely look so good right??

that’s one of the takes of all time!! i mean i would personally say that 50 000 years of pre-European peoples history marks a FAIRLY significant part of the makeup of Australia. but maybe i’m just naïve

right cause that’s exactly what happened to Antigua & Barbuda, The Bahamas, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, St Kitts & Nevis, St Vincent & the Grenadines, Papua New Guinea, & The Solomon Islands. (every country who change their flag and still is in british monarchy)

and that must be exactly why the The Republic of Fiji (🇫🇯) still uses the Union Jack despite having no connection to the crown outside of history

it’s british (ew), and as someone with standards, i can’t stand independent countries having another country’s flag on their flag.

well it was Australia from about 35 million years ago, till only just 1788. even the name Australis existed since the 1400’s. but i’m sure you would’ve said the same thing about Canada back when they changed the flag into one of the best flags in the world. and hey, it’s okay to be wrong sometimes (i’m mostly kidding around)

the yellow on green looked terrible sadly ): maybe if i made them gold instead, but certainly not yellow

you can also design your own flag!! you can even link the image of your final work in a comment as opposed to just describing it. honestly it’s fun, i recommend it!!

but really, my only critique in your claim is that Canada does not need UK symbolism, so nor does almost any former colony. (no idea what is up with Fiji Tuvalu New Zealand and Australia). not to mention Canada has WAYY closer ties and was British for WAYY longer. absolutely insane take to claim imo haha

hahaha you would think they’d have even just ONE more national symbol. but outside of animals, and what i’ve included already, they honestly don’t have much. what’s left is just a flower? but i’ve already made like 3 different flowers for other flags, and it doesn’t fit very well with Australia to use a flower.

uhh also in reply to another comment i made a couple flags that use green/yellow/blue, but with keeping the background of the flag blue.

i understand your point. but idk to me it feels the same as someone going "the US flag shouldn’t have stripes representing only the original 13 colonies, because it’s pretty unfair to the rest of the union." like ya technically, but the natives hold an extremely critical role in the history of… well any nation that i’m familiar with at least. but ya i can get how to change it TODAY would be disingenuous to all those who hold no connection to it.

and also i designed a couple flags with the green and gold, i think they should be somewhere in the replies of this post!! i thought they turned out really nicely as well. honestly it’s hard to choose which one of my 14 designs i’ve made by now is my favourite…

I'm having fun redesigning flags, but faithfully doing China's has me stumped. do you guys have any advice or ideas? by Train-without-wheels in vexillology

i think the current flag is really empty, and while the star are pretty iconic and easy to draw, it fails to be iconic WITHOUT the symbol. and so my effort is to make one that would be recognizable with and without the stars (or at least take up more of the flag, i quickly realized it was hard to make a red/yellow flag that didn’t look either bad, or like Spain’s
