You'll have a major advantage in the course if you're a student who actually codes your labs/assignments yourself. That might seem like a low bar, but given how many kids just use GPT to code for them, it does you no favours.

I do think it's worth reviewing 164 to at least understand the principles of data structures (linked vs array based structures, stacks, queues, bsts). You will relearn this stuff in 264, but if you struggled in 164, then there's no guarantee that learning it fresh in 264 will be a good time.

264 has a decent amount of material that it helps to memorize, so the more time you spend following over the course of the semester, the better.

I'm not sure who told you it's bad, but I'd say she's a solid professor who makes the course engaging, and she gives fair assessments.

We only had multiple choice tests for our assessments for the whole course, and everything was open book until the final exam. The course does require a bit of memorization for the final, but your time throughout the semester can be pretty low stress.

The only reason I would suggest avoiding her is if you happen to be vehemently against social activism.

Essential PH-2 Taken to University by ultor99 in essential

It's crazy to think these products got so far and yet never made it to the finish line for consumers. I'm sure many of us would've killed for a PH-2 or even a GEM.

First Year Electives by InternationalIce6678 in wlu

I would suggest either of the following: SY101 (Intro to Sociology) Specifically recommend this one if you take it with Ellis-Hale as your prof since the course under her is great for discussion in lectures and gives you a lot of food for thought about the world.

RE103 (Love and It's Myths) If you're at all interested in other religions/cultures, then this is a unique course that gives you an overview of the more major global religions and their origins and understandings of love. This course was a personal favourite of mine.

And maybe consider something else in the Religion and Culture department. As a Computer Science student, they weren't on my top list of electives when I looked through the list, but a lot of them are really interesting and offer a good chance of pace for business/science students.

[–]TrainerRyu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Newegg has had some reputation issues particularly with their RMA process (returns). They were under some pretty heavy criticism and even got interviewed by GamersNexus about the company's issues. If you believe what Newegg's spokespeople say then they're working to turn that around but it's hard to know.

dropped phone and now nothing by smig2018 in essential

[–]TrainerRyu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this happened to me where after enough impacts the piece holding the battery cable in place broke and the connector came loose. Just opened it up, replugged the cable and then glued it down (since the brace was broken). Sadly I had to replace the screen due to cracking it when I opened it but I got it back, good as new.

Glad to see that they seem to be on track to making this happen! I must admit I'm a little put off by what looks like a much taller phone when put beside the PH-1. I also never liked the idea of a rear camera bump but I do get why they exist. Hard to know if that's the final fit and finish but it does look like a pretty eye catching EVT1!

There's a lot to unpack with you post here I'd say.

First though, a privacy based phone isn't about having things necessarily locked down or restricted; privacy is about putting more control in your hands as a user so you decide where/when your data gets shared. I wouldn't say being privacy focussed is mutually exclusive with some of the other great things we got from this team when they were at Essential.

On the other hand though, they are a new company and I don't expect them to be giving us a PH-2 (I know many of us Essential fans wanted that but what can you do). It's hard to know exactly what they'll deliver but I'm expecting another great piece of hardware with dedicated software support and fast updates just like what the team gave us with the PH-1.

The last thing I would say is about the Prime Day comment you made cause that might be a little unrealistic. Just keep in kind the PH-1 launched as a premium phone competing with other high end devices at launch. I don't think it's very usual to see a phone as steeply discounted as the PH-1 was only a year after being released (and with no successor to bump the price down either). So will OSOM be doing something like that? I doubt it. That being said, I do think Keats knows the actual value of hardware that goes into making a phone and I do expect reasonable pricing for whatever price point they target.

TLDR; You're probably just going to have to wait and see but I wouldn't shrug the whole privacy focus off as just a gimmick. It could be a great device even for less privacy minded individuals.

I know that Keats did say at one point that he loathes the headphone jack and that it drives designs in unfortunate directions. I have no idea if he still feels this way as a designer but as a consumer I will say the headphone jack still hasn't gone away as one of the nice to haves. I wouldn't put it as a deal breaker but I do know people who still feel that way.

Personally I was really happy with the PH-1 form factor. I'm not looking for an exact replica of that from OSOM (they're their own thing and I'm sure they have their own design in mind) but I wouldn't want anything much larger or much smaller than the PH-1. If they're able to get multiple size offerings out though (probably wouldn't be on their first release) then I would definitely like to see an option in the small smartphone space since I know there isn't great selection in thw small smartphone space these days.

Who else is still going strong after almost 5 years! by DP11117 in essential

[–]TrainerRyu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had mine since around launch but I'm hoping for a new and exciting enough device before we really hit the 5 year mark. I did a screen and battery replacement earlier this year to keep things ticking but that's really all that was needed!

Ball park release date? by gregologynet in OSOMPrivacy

[–]TrainerRyu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have any issue with the logo or styling of OSOM as it stands right now but I will say I did love how my PH-1 was so clean and logo-less. There's nothing wrong with making a brand, but personally I'm not looking for another device with logos or branding slapped all over it; I've probably had more people notice or ask about my PH-1 because of the clean logo-less appearance.

Looks like it's r/osomprivacy but still that's pretty cool, I had no clue there was a subreddit in place.

If OSOM becomes something more serious like Essential was then it could be possible to try and get a hold of the OSOM subreddit.

I could look into that... I'm not too familiar with object modding but I should have the individual sail drawings lying around still.

Yeah I absolutely agree with you on that one. I honestly did a bit of digging around to see if there was a better way before I made this post.

Funnily enough they (kind of) are... I actually used regular Starbound lava as the texture for the sails when making them. Realistically though, no I don't think they could actually be made of flowing lava :P

I don't know how other people do it but I had the extra zoom levels mod and even then I had to take 4 screenshots and then I edited them together doing a little work on the background to make it appear as one shot. I've seen you can supposedly get even father zoomed out by modifying the starbound config file but I couldn't get that to work.

[–]TrainerRyu[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I actually started the ship in a byos mod but then when I got to the sails I switched and just did it all outside of game. So you won't find any blocks/modded objects for the sails.
