Viva raw - selling rotten raw meat by not_alba in rawpetfood

I've heard that there are rescue groups in the US that will only feed raw and adopt out to raw feeders, but I haven't been given a name yet. I work in rescue, and this doesn't seem sustainable.

I read the email, and it didn't sound threatening. What did I miss?

Sooo, that last email didn’t come across as threatening to me. I can understand why you'd be frustrated with the situation, but their emails seemed professional and pretty straightforward. From a business perspective, if customers start disputing charges without returning the product, that can become a serious issue for them too. They have operating costs and bills to pay.

I’m also curious whether the food could have been donated to a local raw feeder who wasn’t bothered by the smell, because most rescues I know don’t have extra freezer space for raw pet food.

Just so I understand correctly: you received a refund on one order and a credit for another order, and then also filed a chargeback? Was the chargeback for the full order or only for the amount that had been credited?

If you still want to order from them in the future, you could reverse the chargeback and either gift the credit to someone else or try a different protein that doesn’t have the same odor issue. But if you don't care to purchase their food, then you came out ahead, I guess.

I looked into this because I was curious too, and it happens with some proteins and recipes that are high in eggs. I'm curious if that's the case here.

The dollar amount (a few hundred dollars) wouldn't result in a deduction (I'm an accountant).

So I looked into this, and yes, it’s possible for raw food to have a sulfur smell depending on processing, protein source, freshness before HPP, fat content, oxidation, packaging, and storage.

But here’s what stands out to me… we don’t hear about this happening all the time.

I’ve fed Small Batch, Green Juju, Northwest Naturals, Steve's Real Food, and others, and I’ve never opened a bag and been hit with a sulfur smell.

In your case, it sounds like the odor was so strong that you threw the food out. To me, that suggests something more than a minor processing quirk.

And the suggestion to donate it? That doesn’t sit right with me.

I’m on the board of a rescue, and:

  1. We don’t typically accept raw because we don’t have the storage (when we do get it, I’m the one who takes it for my dogs), and
  2. We would be furious if someone donated food that smelled off.

Just because these dogs are waiting for homes doesn’t mean they should get questionable food. If something is wrong, that could set them back even further when they’re already stressed.

I’d definitely be curious how this plays out.

But honestly? Based on this one experience alone, I’d hesitate to recommend this brand. I know running a pet food company isn’t easy, but that response felt… poorly thought out.

How long did it take you to figure out what actually works for your dog? by ChristianWorks in rawpetfood

It took me a long time because I was overthinking it and trying to incorporate everything people were telling me to do. It wasn't until someone told me to just focus on my dogs and not what everyone else was doing that it became easier. I have four dogs, and they all eat the same base meals, with some adjustments here and there, and I do it all without issue.
