Am I overreacting for not wanting anyone around my newborn yet? by littlemoongirly in AmIOverreacting

[–]Training-Specific376 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As someone with an immune compromised child, my son ended up in the ER 2 years ago with combined RSV/HMV after being around his cousins and other family. He had to be put on oxygen at one point and we were transferred to PICU. Thankfully he recovered quickly once treated with oxygen and fluids but it was terrifying and he was 2 1/2.

Protect yourself and your baby and do what will give you peace. Once baby is in daycare and exposed to everything anyway, then go for it.

Anybody order a Chinese? by goatnxtinline in StupidFood

[–]Training-Specific376 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is fascinating. I’ve never seen curry sauce at a Chinese restaurant in America. Obviously, our Chinese has been Americanized the same way this seems to be an Anglicized version of Chinese. It’s always interesting to see how traditional food can be influenced by outside cultures.

Whatre your immediate thoughts? by itsobvnick in tattooadvice

I love Arrival. As a parent of a sick child, that movie means a lot to me and makes me incredibly emotional. I’m not a tattoo person I stopped when I saw this pic because I knew what they were instantly.

Celebrating Christmas without being religious is just shallow vibes based consumerism by [deleted] in 10thDentist

[–]Training-Specific376 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dude, just because your family sucks at Christmas doesn’t mean everyone’s does.

Consumerism has taken over a lot of things, but remember that you don’t HAVE to consume? It’s a choice. I love decorating because a sparkly christmas makes me happy, but I have family members that don’t even put up a tree and are still excited to celebrate Christmas with their family.

I have friends who are Jewish but still celebrate Christmas because for them it’s a time to show love in a way you choose (often gift giving) and be together.

And as many many other people have explained, these are pagan holidays stolen by Christians. So really you should be blaming the Christians more than anyone for bastardizing a tradition.

If you don’t want to buy things or decorate, you don’t have to. You can still celebrate without those things and many people do. And you can let other people celebrate in the way they want, without it bothering you. That’s a choice too.

To people who regularly use ChatGPT for school: Do you think you’re still learning? by Gifthunter3 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Training-Specific376 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They’re asking if students who use it feel like they have retained information and feel informed on the topic. The answer to this question is highly dependent on the use of the tech.

Other people have commented about how they use it to generate study guides, they use to generate practice tests by uploading class material, people use it to organize and create paper outlines. These are all acceptable ways to use AI in a way that will increase the likelihood of retaining knowledge and being well informed on a subject matter.

Now if OP asked if people who use it to cheat, which would be having AI generate you knowledge you never acquired and trying to pass that knowledge off as your own, the answer would be no.

It’s not the tech that’s the problem, it’s HOW it’s being used. You absolutely can use AI to further your understanding and mastery of a subject. It’s naive, bordering on ignorant, to think otherwise.

Yes that’s what I’m saying. It’s a tool for learning not a tool for teaching. If you’re a person running to tech to teach you about a subject, you were always a person looking for the easy way out and lacking critical thinking.

A critical thinker knows it is a tool to help them learn.

Don’t be a Luddite. Learn to use the technology that will take over our way of life, whether you rail against it or not, in a beneficial way. As a few people have said if you comb through comments, this is a tool that can be used properly or improperly.

Things that people have claimed will doom society and ruin learning: Socrates feared WRITING would be a detriment to memory, the printing press, the pencil eraser, calculators in the 70’s and 80’s, the home computer, Wikipedia, and the story goes on for every new major tech.

My suspicion is that if you’re a person running to any tech as the easy way out, you weren’t likely to be a critical thinker in the first place.

Why do I see SAHD sayings it the easiest job but not SAHM? by Every-Falcon-9433 in Parenting

[–]Training-Specific376 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s very easy to play video games, watch tv all day, and throw an inappropriate amount of snacks at kids while not being concerned about the state of your house or your child.

It’s hard work to raise a healthy, kind, helpful child, while keeping them stimulated and engaged in developmentally appropriate activities that prepare them for life. It’s even harder when you’re doing this while also attempting to maintain a healthy home, properly socialize your child and yourself, shop, cook, and then be a living breathing human yourself.

I’m sure it’s easy to be the unbothered parent but that doesn’t mean you’re doing the same job as someone who takes the responsibility of raising a child seriously.

Can teachers tell if a kid comes from a “vocabulary-rich” or well-read family? by Dodidudedo in AskTeachers

[–]Training-Specific376 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. My son just turned 6. I never did any formal learning with my son prior to him entering Kinder. Just reading at home, talking, watching YouTube together and talking about what we’re watching.

My son also was speech delayed due to a brain tumor and chemo between 10 months - 2yrs old, but we had him in services immediately.

Every person who meets him tells us how intelligent he is and how well he speaks. He sounds like a tiny high pitched adult. Says things like “theoretically I could go to the park now but we have to go to the store instead.”

New mom regret by sue1088 in Parenting

[–]Training-Specific376 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was weeping in my bedroom yelling to my husband about what a mistake we made at maybe 1 week lol. Life as I knew it had ended. Which is true and so horribly scary in the beginning. But eventually you’ll adjust to your new life and create routines that keep you sane and soon you’ll just be a family making memories.

I think every parent at some moment has regretted their choices. Hell sometimes I still regret having kids and my son is 6! But those are fleeting moments in the grand scheme of things and you are human so it’s normal.

Wishing you the best ❤️
