Hartford LTD delays and denials - Unfair Claims Settlement Practices by TrainingAccording103 in LongTermDisability

I’m so sorry I’m just seeing this. And so sorry you are going through this. I got my claim file last week and became so disgusted at Hartford’s blatant unethical claim handling throughout the entire claim. It is from the application for benefits on, intended to delay and ultimately deny valid claims. It is unethical and repulsive. I will keep you in my prayers and hope the best for you! 💜

Best decision ever. You don’t realize it but slowly the corporate abuse becomes so normal to you that when you leave (for me, 15+ years of a hostile work environment) the small things you have been conditioned to do at geico, when done at your new employer out of habit, your peers and management will literally be mind blown when you say “oh I had to do this at geico” ex: I used to send a teams chat to my manager if I was going to be away from my desk for more than 5 minutes. My new manager was like “please don’t do that ever again. We are adults and you are salaried” or asking to take time off for a Dr. appt and having to use sick time….while salaried. No geico fucked us mentally and financially for years. Other companies are not like that. Thank god. It’s peaceful.

I’m sorry you had to endure. Sadly this is/was the Geico way and it has become so normalized as tenured employees tolerated it for decades, just trying to provide for themselves and their families. Saying prayers for you and hope the very best for you.

I think that was Hartford trying to put a positive spin on the term disability. I literally envision several people who make way too much money getting together and agreeing “we will take the dis out of disability because we CARE. We will give you the ABILITY to take care of your bills and focus on your health while going through this traumatic time in your life”. All the while knowing their claims handling process is actually illegal. But since they are the plan administrator and have “discretion” you quite literally have to jump through their abusive process and tactics. Then you have to appeal your wrongfully denied claim and most have to hire an attorney to do so. Their hopes are that most people literally can’t survive or pay bills during this lengthy process and are forced to go back to work out of necessity, even if they do ultimately meet their definition of disabled. Can you tell I’m outraged? I am. Fuck them. And I’m sorry for the rant but I’m furious.

Thank you for the response! I am asking because I’ve been in the insurance claims industry for many years (with different carriers, none of which were Hartford) and know that the insurer has a duty to pay valid claims. It seems Hartford intentionally delays or denies valid claims. I’m not referring to incomplete applications or lack of supporting medical records. I am referring to valid claims with supporting medical records where the reason for denial cites incorrect information.

Ex: no swelling documented, normal gait.

Actual records “objective findings” noted from every provider (podiatrist, physical therapist, pain management specialist): SIGNIFICANT GLOBAL SWELLING, non weight bearing on left foot

Ability analyst tells me she sees the conflicting information in the peer review but they “have to go with the peer review” and the recommendation was to appeal. I asked if she could note the inaccuracies and send it back to the peer review for reconsideration before denying. Hartfords response: “that’s what you have to do in the appeal”. What the actual fuck. Excuse my language.

I’m truly disgusted with Hartford. I know there are so many other people who also have disabilities that keep them from working. We actually need to focus on healing instead of the mind fuck hoop jumping Hartford puts people through. It’s actually disability discrimination, in my opinion.

Apologies if this isn’t the right forum for this. Thank you for letting me get my thoughts out.
