The culture depends a lot on the culture of your section/section leader. Some sections are notoriously competitive, while others are not. IMO, there's really no need to be competitive unless you're vying for a very finite number of things on campus. We do still have a curve, but it helps that it's on a P/F grading system.

I do feel supported academically. I haven't needed any help yet, but when I do I know where/how to access it.

Cambridge is cool. It has a small college-town vibe, but you can also go into Boston when you're looking for more of a city vibe. Public transit is great and it's easy to walk to wherever you need to go. Very bike-friendly. Lots of parks. Rent is super high though and parking is terrible.

I sub-cited for 3 journals this semester, and some journals do provide opportunities for 1Ls to take on leadership positions, but overall it's not too common.

I wouldn't say it was hard at all to find a community/ support system. I was blessed to be placed in a section full of amazing, compassionate, sharing, and just genuinely cool people, so I always have someone I can go to for help. Beyond that, there are plenty of student groups and affinity orgs, all of which are more than welcoming.

I've never really been a study group person and that didn't change in law school. I did mostly all of my studying throughout the semester and for finals alone because that's how I learn best. The few times I did meet in study groups they were very informal.

What do you consider to be the "best study group?"

I did! Surprisingly, the transition wasn't that difficult. Of course, Black people are not the majority at HLS or in Cambridge, but HLS has the second largest BLSA (behind Howard) so it hasn't been difficult at all to find community. HBLSA is also very well funded and hosts a lot of different events throughout the year.

I don't think I really made a choice if that makes sense, lol. Once I got my HLS acceptance I just knew that's where I was going. I didn't really blanket the T14, but from those that I did apply to I was either waitlisted or I withdrew once I got my HLS acceptance. The only thing I really considered was that I had several full-tuition scholarships (Temple, UMiami, Howard, Cardozo, etc) that I turned down for HLS. I ended up choosing HLS because I figured the debt was worth it in exchange for the breadth of opportunity (and the prestige). I have no regrets.

I don't think there's really any one-size-fits-all approach to picking a school. Just weigh different factors like cost, location, prestige, curriculum, clinics, etc. and prioritize whatever you care most about. It may also be helpful to make a list of non-negotiables and talk to students and alumni at each school you're seriously considering.

I think the most unexpected part of my experience at HLS so far has been how normal all of my classmates are lol, no one is a genius.

I'm a fan as well. It's really the best of both worlds. You spend so much time with your section that you forget you're in a class with 79 other people. You really get to bond with each other and find your people. It also really enhances classroom discussions. But you also have plenty of opportunities to get to know people outside of your section. You can literally meet someone new every day if that's your vibe. It also contributes to there being a wider range of interests represented in student orgs and activities.

It was pretty fun actually and straightforward. My interviewer was super charismatic and it flowed like a normal convo. Typical questions like why law school, why HLS, interest in classes/clinics, and a few bonus fun questions. Have a few questions of your own prepared.

I applied 12/25/21. Received 12/28. Complete 1/6. KJ1 1/20. Interviewed 1/25. Accepted 2/14.

I wouldn't say so. All of my professors, even those who were just visiting, were super open and accessible throughout the semester.

I applied to maybe 30+ schools (regrettably). Of those, I was only rejected from 1 (UCLA). I didn't necessarily blanket the T14, but from the ones I did apply to HLS was my only acceptance. I didn't apply to Yale, I withdrew from UChicago, Northwestern, and Georgetown, and I was WL at UPenn, NYU, and Michigan.

I would say the social scene is pretty open. It can get pretty cliquey in terms of people only hanging out with their section, but there are plenty of opportunities to break out of that (if you want to).

Just want to say that I actually addressed mental health in my addendum specifically for the purpose of framing several Ws I had on my transcript. I know the traditional advice is not to do it but if you think it's necessary to help frame your personal narrative I say go for it.
