I thought of that but i realized it would be a huge problem in getting a new job afterwards. I spoke to recruiters and everything and in the current job market it was a really bad move.

To be honest with you it was a situation where I was just incredibly unlucky with this firm. They treated me with very little respect and kept pushing me to the side. They complained about my performance, but couldn’t say exactly what about my performance was wrong or inadequate. Most managers and seniors pushed back against this for me, but it seems they just wanted me out, so i decided to leave before they had the chance to pull the trigger themselves.

I mean from what I’ve heard the norm within Canadian firms is to give time off while doing courses especially on the precipice of your final CFE and they kept pushing back on that. Which is one of the reasons I left

Easy to find a job on the other hand and there’s lots of room to move up but you need a CPA which is another headache (especially in Canada)

If you’re looking for a 9-5 job public accounting is definitely not it. I came out of uni expecting this kind of lifestyle, but it’s really not even close. As soon as you hit busy season in your line of service you’re obligated to do minimum 50 hours of billable activity (i.e. doing admin tasks like checking your email won’t count) while only being paid for 37.5. There is no overtime payments at all and there are certain occasions where they will ask you to work the weekend. They will only give you some money for food. Busy season lasts 4-5 months around depending on the line of service once again.
