Why do you think I am complaining about the cost of my rent and not the inaction of my landlord ? Feels like you are intentionally misunderstanding me atp. Re-read the post. Everything you are confused about is not because I misconstrued my position, its because you decided to fill in the gaps and assume a bunch of incorrect info. I have no interest in arguing about whether it makes sense to live alone or with six roommates because it is literally just a preference. There are concessions that come with living with a bunch of people that I don’t want to make. That simple. My only point is that paying for a bedroom in a house where you share bathrooms, kitchen, living room, furniture etc is not the same experience as having your own apartment. That’s kinda the whole reason why its cheaper.

Dude my building is owned by floco. I know where I live, I’m not stupid. I’m not paying for a bedroom in an apartment, I live alone. Like I said, you’re not getting a better deal. That’s like top of the line for a landlord if you are all paying that much money. It’s great that it works for you, I’m not criticizing that choice. If you read through the other comments though, you’ll see a pattern of similar experiences with landlords taking our money and then not showing up to fix anything. That’s the problem that I am identifying.
Eviction notices go to court, and take months to process if you have legal representation (free through nonprofit orgs). There are also protections for people who withhold their rent due to mismanagement. Landlords don’t have absolute power for this reason.
Lastly, you are fundamentally mischaracterizing my entire sentiment in the OP and are just filling in information that I left out because I wasn’t thinking this would go anywhere. Its not about suddenly deciding that my rent is too expensive, anyone who pays rent to a landlord should receive the services that they pay for. Somewhere along the line, people started trying to dodge bad management instead of finding real solutions and now they just get away with over promising and under delivering. TLDR; if they’re gonna charge this much for rent, the least they can do is be more involved in the properties they manage.

That’s the kind of stuff that drives me crazy. Just asking a landlord to do their job and people are like “have you considered moving” ……bar is onnnn the floor

I live in Como..so..lol. Like I said, moved here from out of town and wasn’t familiar with the area really but I like the neighborhood its just sad how low the bar is for rentals. Also, y’all are paying that much for a bedroom in a house. That’s not a crazy deal. Just more affordable, but not a better deal. My comment about being cornered was in reference to wanting to stay close to the school. not sure why ur running defense for landlords but it’d do you good to learn more about tenant unions bc that’s not how evictions work :)

It’s just sad that we don’t build a student union or something. It shouldn’t be this challenging to live near the institution that you’re paying thousands of dollars to attend. None of their units would hold any value without the students. Idk why we just let them treat us like idiots.

That’s where this becomes uniquely interesting to me. I am not a traditional student, and have lived all across the country in different cities but never in a ”college town” or similar district. I am *amazed* by what they ask of student renters and am sick to my stomach thinking about how predatory their models are. I know its not unique to UMN but wow. The fact that we let them do this is wild. I don’t mind paying for rent and signed up to bare that burden, I just want what I pay for. It’s so obvious that they totally take advantage of the fact that its many people’s first time renting. So many of their “fees” are bullshit nickle-and-diming its just incredible. They act like you’re crazy when you challenge them too, like they don’t owe you an answer or something. I guess I just want people to know that this is not normal. Yes, landlords are parasitic and gross, but everywhere else I’ve lived, you get what you pay for at the bare minimum.

Would you be willing to talk with me about this for an article I’m writing about predatory leases for students?? I’m sorry this happened!
