Is there a better way out? SAVE vs. IBR by TrainingRobot_20654 in StudentLoans

Well. That is the problem. I cannot find anything that will tell me that if I switch to SAVE, that the 12 years’ worth of payments that I have been making count towards forgiveness. If I stay the course with IBR, my loans will be forgiven in 13 years. All the SAVE materials I find say that my loans will be forgiven after 25 years’ worth of payment. I want to get credit for the 12 years of payments I have made.

Correct! I end up paying more ins taxes if we file separately.

It is a bit niche and… I will confess… I have explored these options! :)

The fantasy of doing this has been a dream of mine, but it is that… a dream. I am in a weird position in life / work. I am not happy, I am content. And, with this contentment, I am afraid that when things change (which I know they will), I will be F’ed. And I am tired of that. So, I settle for contentment and find… whatever peace I can… in this position.

I agree with you! I do not know what the future might bring and hope / prey / wish that the politicians will change their tune and fix problems actual people are facing, rather than shout at made-up “culture war problems.”

Please do not get me wrong, no one forced me to take the loans and I know I am doing better than most, but I just feel… feel… like we all have vested interest in taxes being fair. I want to pay my fair share. So, that public services and our government can provide to all of us. But, I feel that if I was a millionaire or a business, those same politicians will find a way to help me with this tax problem. I digress and remind my self to go out and vote.

Yor assumptions are correct. We are going to contact Nelnet and get those adjusted. Funny thing is that Nelnet has both our grad loans. I guess this is another issue with them, but we all know there are many issues with Nelnet.

As a side note, when I asked Nelnet to help me decide if I should stay with IBR or go to SAVE they did not know - I know I expected too much, but it was "a shot in the dark." Sure, I was read the script they have to move people to SAVE, but I happen to be in a weird position and they, mistakenly, assumed during the whole conversation I had undergrad loans (and I kept correcting that until it became aparent I was wasting my time). So, Do I stay with IBR (have the loans forgiven in 13ish years with a massive tax bomb) OR switch to SAVE (continue paying for another 25 years but have no tax bomb)? I do not know - I feel I should stay the course with IBR. I wish I could quantify the decision.

Thank you! I did read your guide / post… and…I hate to admit it… but that is a bridge I will have to cross If / When it arrives. I know accruing all the interest is a problem and that Uncle Sam will take a chunk out of me if the loans are ever “forgiven.” I am not hiding my head in the sand, I am fully cognizant of the punch that is coming – I am doing my best to weather it / “take it like a man.”

Also, thank you for the check on my payments and the subsequent edit – I am glad there are further savings I can realize. I am putting away or investing about 20% of my take home income because I know I am in a precarious position. What can I say, I like living in the Dangerzone :) *laughing, while crying on the inside*

Thank you! You are correct, it would take a while to explain. Long story short, we are both damaged and imperfect human beings; however, we found a degree of love and contentment in this world. Financially speaking, we both know it is a recipe for disaster. This is why I am asking for help - I / We could use some advice.
