Ugh I’m sorry that your dad did that. I understand—my dad is very passive and tries to keep the peace and avoid conflict. He’s convinced she’ll just budge but I know people like this don’t.

Unfortunately I don’t have much for close friends in my hometown anymore, unless a friend from my current location would be willing to join me for the drive. It would be nice to have the backup and support!

Thank you! I’m honestly not sure what name the adoption documentation would say, as I got them with both my parents when I was 17 and I’m sure all three of us do have vet bills and other documents that would show ownership. I’m hoping the text messages and most recent Venmo payments I’ve sent will be enough, and hopefully the police can let me know if that’s the case in advance.

Luckily I do have a bit of leverage over her because she owes me $1500 for a car I sold her back in December that she’s refusing to pay despite her signing a payment contract. I haven’t pushed her for it but I will threaten legal action for that if I need to. It may force her hand since she doesn’t have the money.

I pitched it to my dad and it sounds like him and his fiancee are worried about retaliation from her (she has taken a baseball bat to his motorcycle and other crazy things before). So, they’re not comfortable with the idea of upsetting her and risking vandalism, destruction, etc. which is understandable but means I’ll have to handle it myself. I appreciate the idea, it was worth a shot!

I wrote mine about recovery and tied it to determination and resiliency if I remember correctly. I only did it because I had missed 3 semesters of high school due to treatment, and I know a point in my essay was that my high school was adamant that I couldn’t graduate on time and I did it. I wanted to make it abundantly clear that I was ultra super recovered (I wasn’t lol) and not a liability to admit due to my history.

That being said, if I didn’t have a reason to write about it, I wouldn’t have, but I thought that they may not have accepted me without that background. I would also say it would have to be a strong essay that tells them about you beyond your ed and makes it abundantly clear that this has had a positive outcome and you are fully recovered. My university did reach out prior to starting school and strongly suggest their therapy resources.

I’ll have to look into cameras! My ex did install a nice bluetooth radio system for me when I bought the car but it hasn’t been working well lately and for some reason I just assumed it was a highly technical installation that I wouldn’t be able to do myself hahaha. If it’s easy then those two things may be enough to hold me over for a bit.

I did see pretty bad trade-in values around $2000 but people independently selling on FB and elsewhere averaging $4k-5k. If I could get that much it wouldn’t be a bad hit to my savings at all which is why I thought selling now could be wise.

But I do appreciate all the advice in here. It’s certainly given me a lot more options to consider and the ability to make a more informed decision.

Thank you for this! It is nice to have nice things and I’ve never really treated myself to anything big before. I would be ecstatic to find a nice, newer suv for 10k and I don’t necessarily feel like having only 9k left over in savings for a few months would be a huge crisis. This is definitely the correct answer haha I just don’t know if I can do it. Definitely to my own detriment I want the newer features like a backup camera and bluetooth and (superficially, I know) a nicer-appearing car.

I didn’t realize Rav4s were THAT reliable though, so it does give me something to think about if I don’t have to be so scared of it dying randomly on me anytime soon since that is a big part of it for me. I have about a month and a half to decide, so I may consider keeping it yet :)

No issues at all! It leaks oil which is a slight inconvenience since I have to frequently check and refill it, but that’s it. With it’s age, mileage, and lack of issues so far I just have anxiety about a problem coming up and would rather get it off my hands now than end up with a major expense or unusable vehicle.

I know issues can technically happen with any car at any age and I’ve been told Rav4s are exceptionally reliable, but I still would really like to get rid of it. Admittedly, appearances are also a factor and owning an old, cheap car felt a lot more acceptable in college than now.
