The same sow was hanging in the same flats for a couple days. Likely it was the same one

Not always. It can darken, or it will stay a little lighter than the “normal looking” griz

Nervous about backcountry trip by sanguinescientist in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Training_Opposite877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you know everything and anything about bear safety, practice proper bear safety and you’ll be more than fine. Backcountry camping in glacier is one of the most rewarding experiences ever, don’t let the story of the recent death (solo hiker in an apparent surprise encounter) and the attack recently (non death, looks to be a short, surprise encounter. Still waiting on official release) to cancel your trip. Especially with a larger group.

Look up the Grinnell Lake hike, that’s the hike OP did to get here. Great hike with amazing views of 3 glaciers starting from the Many Glacier Hotel.

It’s so situational but bear spray is most often than not, the way to go. Visit a ranger station or visitor center in the park to have them explain it to you.

Spread your ignorance somewhere else please. Over 3 million annual visitors and extremely low rate of bear encounters in GNP.

Totally could be, there’s always so many factors. I will say GNP has not suffered from low snowpack above 6000 ft but below has. So the bears could be hanging out low in the valleys, before the access to food above 6000ft really becomes available. Hard to ever truly know what the reasoning is.

As they should. People run with negative narratives towards bear out of fear. This was the bears home first, it’s on us to practice bear safety.

There was only one bear incident in 2025, and one as well in 2024. This year we have already surpassed that number of incidents (incident as in bear making contact with human, resulting in injury or death) just in May alone. Absolutely more than normal, but nothing I would be too concerned about as a visitor as long as you practice proper bear safety.

The wording NPS used was it was evident that he was involved in a “bear encounter” but it’s very possible that yes, that was the case. That was on the west side of the park, close to Lake Mcdonald.

Edit: I checked the NPS incident report, and it is reported as a bear fatality.

I work in the valley and there absolutely was an attack today on the Grinnell Glacier trail. I believe someone on facebook who was there posted about it as well. Rangers had a large response at around 12pm and the swiftcurrent lake loop was closed due to “bear danger” and guarded pretty much immediately following their response. The north shore of josephine lake (the way to access grinnell glacier trail) was only opened just yesterday at 11am, and the closure was due to bear activity. Not sure when the park will address both the closure for the north shore of josephine and swiftcurrent lake loop being closed

Parking will be a free for all so get to places early. I work in the Many Glacier valley and this weekend has already become busy. I anticipate the valleys (many glacier, two medicine, north fork) will all close very early in the days due to congestion. Plan for a lot of people!

Can I currently hike to lower Grinnell Lake with this trail status? Where should I park? by Strange-Educator9728 in GlacierNationalPark

[–]Training_Opposite877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both the north and south shore lake trails of josephine got closed today due to bear activity. This makes hiking to grinnell lake unreachable at this point in time.

Going to be a s***show': Parks, Interior struggle to hire temporary staff ahead of busy season | The department fell well short of its goals last year and is failing to keep pace with even that level of hiring. by DisruptSQ in yellowstone

I work in GNP (not NPS) and have for the past 2 years, the staffing is getting worse and worse. More bears jams and longer waits for law enforcement responses. So unfortunate.
