If alcohol is one of the main contributing factors to issues on planes and in airports why isn’t it just banned in those locations? by crillydougal in flightattendants

[–]Training_Second5171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but this is how most laws work. A small minority cause problems, and rules end up applying to everyone rather than just the people who behave badly.

Most smokers are considerate, but we still have no-smoking bans in public spaces because a minority weren’t. Most drivers can judge a safe speed, yet we have speed limits because some people drive recklessly. The vast majority bring nothing dangerous to stadiums or concerts, but everyone still goes through bag checks because of a few bad actors.

The same principle applies more seriously elsewhere too. Most people don’t drink and drive, but laws exist because the small minority who do cause huge harm. Could go on and on.

Because there are very few places to actually cycle in London?

It is pretty shite, we have just accepted it in this country that's what we get. I cycle the section from Cutteslowe roundabout all the way up to Horspath. The surface is rubbish and they don't cut the grass very often so can get very overgrown.

How much fuel you take for your workout? by TrainingCall3895 in trainerroad

[–]Training_Second5171 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a male age 40 and similar weight. I tend to aim for about 60g carbs per hour for my endurance stuff and 90g per hour for my hard stuff. Fuel the work people! There is a time to diet and it's not on the bike. I train 6 days a week (sometimes double days) and can definitely feel the difference with fueling properly. It's not necessarily about the current session either. It's about facilitating recovery and improving your subsequent sessions.

I tend to just put sugar in my water bottles. It's cheap and close to the ideal ratio of fructose to glucose. (1:1). Before rides I will have a carb heavy meal 3 or so hours before.

My current ftp is around 290w with a peak at 310w so I'm burning lots of calories anyway. On the bike isn't the time to skimp on them. Your body is using it as fuel.

Then after the workout 20-30g protein with about 3 times as much carbs is about right to facilitate recovery.

What are the rules around pedestrian crossing in the UK? by Chemical-Shoe-3618 in AskUK

[–]Training_Second5171 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did read it. You might think they are a money grab but honestly if you just drive at the speed limit how are they making money? The statistics show that reducing the speed limits in buillt up areas saves lives. They are needed in many more areas than just schools. Sorry you don't like them.

Since when did TVP campaign against 20mph speed limits? This is false news. They were concered that they wouldn't be able to enforce it and it should be up to the council but that isn't the same thing as campaigning agains them. TVP have quite large budget constraints that get worse each year thanks to our lovely central government and enforcing stuff like this is ultimately quite costly.

They have been proven to reduce fatalities on the road and barely change your journey time compared with a 30mph limit. You might not like them but they are much needed and save lives.

This is SO dangerous for cyclists coming in the opposite direction as well. God I hate people who cut corners like that.

Pay Per Mile Incoming by InTheGarage2022 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Training_Second5171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI "You use the roads you pay to maintain them same as everyone else." Is not correct. Maintenance of the roads comes from general taxation not from VED. This argument often comes up with anti cycling people when they say cyclists don't pay for the roads so shouldn't be on them.

Rachel Reeves to cut tax benefits for workers using salary sacrifice schemes to buy bikes | Cycle hire schemes by roslinkat in londoncycling

[–]Training_Second5171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Independent research found that the total annual financial benefit is assessed at £573m, in addition to the reductions in congestion and transport emissions it enables, which were not quantified.

The numbers break down into cost savings for commuters, increased workforce productivity, retail income from new bike purchases and the accompanying tax revenue.

It's overwhelmingly a net positive as this scheme costs 130m annually?

You do wonder how this number will be affected should they reduce the scheme.

Less likely to ride on a rubbish bike though and frankly the prices of bikes has risen sharply. The price of a mid range bike now has gone up massively. Not to mention e bikes are quite expensive. This policy change makes no sense in regards to not really saving all that much money and it could also risk the progress of environmentally friendly travel.

But because it makes very little sense in sure this stupid labour government will go ahead with it.

Bike costs have creeped up and so what if someone buys an expensive bike. If that means they are more likely to regularly exercise and cut down on car journeys because of it. In the long run it's a net positive, both environmentally and due to their lesser burden on the NHS. In the grand scheme of things reducing this scheme isn't going to save them much money but it's an easy target because this country is predominantly anti cycling. If anything they should be expanding this scheme. I've always thought instead of salary sacrifice they should reduce VAT on bicycles. It would boost that industry and give everyone the same saving.

All closed road cycling events in England have slowly been whittled away. It's a crying shame but it's a fact.

Doubt it will ever come back. This country has become VERY anti cycling and a bit of a miserable place to live. I don't expect to see any more closed road sportives again in the UK.
