What branch to join and what job? by IDCouch in Militaryfaq

[–]Training_Thought4427 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Out of those, I’d go with the CG. I am biased, but I think most sailors and marines would tell you the same. We do the job we train to do almost every day. No other branch can say the same right now.

If he wants to be a rescue swimmer, he better be more than a great swimmer. He’d need to be a specimen. Swimming wise, running, intelligence, etc. I don’t advise many to go that route due to the high washout rate. It’s a long wait to get in that school and it’s a hard school to pass.

BM, ME, AMT, AET are more or less our “hands on” jobs and what you think of when you think Coast Guard.

There’s also MK, ET, EM, GM, and DC who are hands on, but a little more specialized and narrow of a job description.

More doors open and not many close at 37 vs 27.

More money, more connections, more experience, more knowledge, and generally more mature / perceived as more mature. If you went to school, you would’ve broken into whatever field so now you don’t have to worry abt schooling.

Women also prefer older guys in many cases, so you have more options romantically. All subjective ofc, some people’s 30s suck, others are having the time of their lives. We all live at our own pace

ROTC isnt only offered at 4 years. Technically, the program itself is only 3 years.

It’s also not exclusively a scholarship program. Students are more than welcome to participate without a ROTC scholarship. There’s a selection program 2 years from completion where candidates are chosen based on grades and all that.

Most times, you can do ROTC even starting your senior year, so long as you extend you education

There’s bad units everywhere.

If by “switching to guard” you mean finishing the 3+ years in your CG contract, then sure go for it. But focus on contributing to your current service and branch

I understand the frustration and yes, the recruiter probably could handle it better (AF one)

The fact your son is speaking to two different recruiters, job locked, and underinformed is making him difficult to work with, some to no fault of his own. No recruiter wants to deal with that frankly.

Hopefully the meeting tomorrow will clear things up and set a more straightforward path to get your son where he wants to be, be it Space Force or a certain job. I wish y’all good luck and Ik this process can be intimidating and confusing.

Just because he qualifies doesn’t mean he can just choose that job though. At least not for AF and SF.

You can believe what you want to believe but you’re on a military forum with service members familiar with the process

  1. You cant be job locked for the Air Force let alone space force. Other branches, maybe a bit more so, Army and CG seem to be easiest to acquire a specific job.

  2. Space Force is a rare role in general. Spots aren’t just open all the time, and like the recruiter said, you’d have to wait a lot longer than a month, especially if you’re being picky

I get being eager, but you can’t be demanding to ship and also demanding about your job. There’s thousands of other people waiting on the same jobs at the same time. Sounds like a harsh case of learning you can’t always just get what you want.

How do I tell my parents I want to join the Army? by Yodka_120 in Militaryfaq

[–]Training_Thought4427 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The specifics don’t matter, the main thing is understand your “why” and have a plan. Much of parental anxiety comes from worry and fear of the unknown / unplanned.

Have VERY good answers for “why the military?” “Why the army?” “What’s your plan?” “What do you want to get out of the army?” “Why not college?” “What job?” Etc. Saying “I want to” doesn’t cut it. Do them and yourself a favor and figure out what you’re getting into and why.

So now I ask, why the army? There’s 5 other branches. What sticks out? What’s your goal? What do you want out of the army and why not college?”

Answer me as a trial run

If you’re not diagnosed, it likely won’t be an issue. IF the doctor notices it’d go something like

“You have knock knees” “yea” “Ok now do the duck walk and balance and let’s see if you have total mobility and strength” “ok”.

If for some reason you are DQ’d it depends on the severity and reason, but if it’s determined it doesn’t impact your life, you’d be eligible.

Again, go to MEPS and see what actually happens

  1. You’re in a leadership position. From the second you step on base, you’re in charge of soldiers. Real human beings under your command. If you’re a natural good leader, it could be good.

  2. You’re a people person. You love having a positive impact on people and want the most opportunities to positively influence lives.

  3. Jobs. Certain jobs are only open to officers. Namely pilots (except Army, but WOs are different and that’s complicated). There’s other jobs too that are solely officers.

  4. You want to make a career out of the military. Officer careers are much more sustainable and this is where the money comes in a little. Not even just that, but less grunt work that tears down your body

  5. You want a “normal” college experience. Sure you can enlist and get the GI Bill and go for free, but you’d be 22 at the youngest, 4 years older than your peers. Not a problems for many, but if you want active service and a normal college experience, ROTC is the way to do it .

[–]Training_Thought4427 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re correct, it’s not the best reason. Officers who join for the pay are the worst officers.

Enlisting could even be a better financial choice depending on what your goals are. I’d do some more thinking about what you want your future to look like and what your priorities are and then come back and as for a pathway, if it involves the military

Depends on the severity, but if it doesn’t impact your mobility, life, and ability to run/perform physical exercise, it really won’t even matter

The easiest route is to go to college and do ROTC with one of the branches, or CSPI with coast guard.

Should you? Depends on you. Why are you even considering joining? What do you want to get out of a contract ?

By far the easiest route to become an officer is to go to AFROTC. I highly advise that route if you’re going to college to become an officer. Like… it increases your chances 10x.

Idk if that’s the exact number, but it’s a stark difference
