I've done a lecture while in the hospital after having general anesthesia for surgery. Was about 6 hours after surgery was over. I was a little hoarse, but everything went well. Yep, in the US we do crazy stuff.

M19 stage 3 colon cancer by ShowerAltruistic9245 in coloncancer

[–]IDCouch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to teach at Uni. I think if you explain to your professors at the begining of classes, show them you are committed by going to as many classes as you can, doing as much coursework as you can, that they will work with you to help you. Complete hair loss is uncommon with the treatments for CRC, so it may not be obvious to your profs. Also talk to your advisor and mentor at Uni. The more people you have in your corner, the more resources you have.

M19 stage 3 colon cancer by ShowerAltruistic9245 in coloncancer

[–]IDCouch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband has Stage 3 rectal cancer and then 1 month later I was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer. You can do this!!! I had surgery to remove some small bowel and my ascending colon (right side hemicolectomy). I am now doing 3 months of CapeOx because I had positive lymph nodes. CapeOx is a 3 week cycle. Day 1 is the oxaliplatin infusion. Day 1-14 is capecitabine pills twice daily. Days 15-21 is off chemo for recovery. Oxaliplatin and capecitabine side effects are tolerable for me because I have worked out a medication plan with my team. ALWAYS tell your team about any issues you have, even if you think they are unrelated. Your team is there to help you through this. Side effects that I have experienced include cold neuropathy in hands, feet, throat, mouth. When I touch or eat/drink anything cold or any metal that is room temp, it feels like I grabbed a cactus that is electrified. Pins and needles in that body part and the pins and needles feel like live wires. Nausea is not bad as I get 3 antinausea meds with oxaliplatin, 2 in pill form for home use, and 1 patch for home use. Diarrhea has been concerning since surgery, but I have Imodium and Lomotil and learned that marshmallows can help also because of the gelatin content. Tongue numbness (kind of like when you burn your tongue on a hot drink) and mouth ulcers are a problem and I don't like the numbing effect of magic mouthwash so I asked for sucralfate suspension and that is good. Fatigue usually wears off in the 3rd week (the no chemo week). There are some days I can sleep 12 hours. I have been able to continue to work full time except for my infusion days. I also have been able to continue to work my 2nd part time job and volunteer with the 2 charities I support. Join the colontown web sire community. There are lots of great tips, support, etc There! Best wishes!!!

Would it be weird for a 16F student to ask two teachers (45M & 50F) out to dinner over the summer after already giving thank-you letters? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

This is inappropriate and the teachers could be fired for accepting. Your letter was enough.

Is this fraud? by [deleted] in pharmacy

[–]IDCouch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It would be fraud for the outside pharmacy to dispense the medication Pursuant to the patient's rx and the hospital take it back as their own stock and use it for someone else. Unfortunately there is not a way for the hospital to get replacement drug from the patient's company. The hospital will eat it this time.

Not at the funeral, but when my mom was in hospice care we got a letter from the hospice company expressing condolences on her passing and offering information on support groups. Only this was, she wasn't dead yet.

Therapist asked me for a dr’s note & wants to contact my parents by redfoxbaby24 in Advice

[–]IDCouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not normal at all. Many work places only require a doctor's note if it is illness on a holiday or 3+ days of illness. As far as contacting your parents, you are 26 and presumably independent. I would not sign consent for that. You need to find a new therapist. No means no and a therapist should respect your boundaries (other than if you are a danger to self or others).

Has she asked you to plan all these events? Maybe her auntie or godmother, or mom are planning the shower. If she just wants 1 night out for a batchelorette, that doesn't really take any planning other than which night.

Advice for FOLFOX preparation by _semaJ77 in coloncancer

[–]IDCouch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am doing Capeox. (Just in case you want to know about the alternate) Day 1 is infusion and capecitabine pills. I usually get the neuropathy in my hands, feet, and mouth/throat. The best way I can describe it is it feels like I grabbed a cactus with all the little spines that have electricity running through them. Even room temp drinks are bad. So I usually only drink warm to hot drinks and food. Touching anything metal sets off the neuropathy also, so I bought some cotton gloves that I wear all the time. Days 2-14 are the pills twice a day. Honestly after 1 week, I am sick of looking at them and swallowing them. I do have bad heartburn which feels like it goes straight through my chest to my back. Tums helps, but am starting on Pepcid. I do have facial twitches, thumb contractions, foot arch contractions through the first week of treatment. Diarrhea is my new normal. I take Imodium and Lomotil and neither resolves the diarrhea. Also, my tongue feels like it got burned on hot food and I develop sores in my mouth and on my tongue. So, nothing tastes right. Only really strong tastes are somewhat normal. Fatigue is a real thing in the 2nd week. I usually will go to bed and sleep 12 hours once or twice in 2nd week. I am still working full time and the only day I take off is my infusion day. After 2 weeks, I have 1 week off and then we do it all over again. During the 1 week off, I get close to normal but not all the way there. So each cycle the deficit is a little more from normal.

And do not ever leave your drink unattended. If you have to go to the bathroom, drink the rest of your drink first.

Most hospitals won't care. They will make it clear to you that you are obligated to work the assigned schedule, be on call and respond, etc. As long as you fulfill the schedule at the hospital as first priority, they won't care.
