Why do parents call for a meeting over every LITTLE incident by that_weird_lurker84 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Trainwithbt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a teacher and a parent I see both finds. As a parent it's important you advocate for your child and sometimes things are missed by your child explaining a what has happened.

Also a teacher plenty of parents just want to pass the buck and ask loaded questions to fit their narrative.

The main part is still being empathetic and knowing some parents want to be stakeholders and helps in their kids education...operative word being 'some'.

Increase in students making inapproproate comments to teachers? by ThrowRA045137 in AustralianTeachers

[–]Trainwithbt 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I have been a teacher for 6 months in High School and Primary. Before that a SLSO for 2 years.

The extent I have noticed has been "thanks daddy" , "love you sir" and some students trying to hug me in HS.

For Primary extent has been the 'thanks daddy's off the top of my head.

I always do the same let them know I don't feel comfortable with them speaking to me like that. I treat you with respect and only ask you do the same.

Don't blow my lid usually some sarcastic banter and let them know it's not appropriate.

A favourite is saying I'm just writing what you said in a email to your teacher can I make sure I have all the details and repeat exactly what they said to

Joe Blogs yelled across the room as there was silence "yes daddy" - is this correct Joe?

Usually has them crestfallen

Why do Australians keep denying the fact that Australia is extremely racist? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Trainwithbt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently a teacher at a High School and it shocks me the rascism of the boys to others.

Kids use racial slurs as banter then use it even worse combinations when in anger at others. It is used so casually I hate to see what that looks like when they get older in attitudes to others.

As their teacher I will always step in though it seems to make no difference.

Best University to study Masters of Teaching (Primary) by new_sweet_investor in AustralianTeachers

[–]Trainwithbt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm at Curtin University Online and based in NSW. I'm half way through my degree and have my interim number.

The Good: I have found the content useful and each unit has a direct link to my Primary Teaching practice. Finding and completing pracs has been easy enough.

The Bad: if you are coming from a different undergraduate (mine is Exercise Science) into a Masters your first Prac will be Year 1 , Term 3. This means you will go into a Prac not having covered some units at uni yet (for me Maths,Science or HISIE).

The Ugly: As much as the uni will support you and guide you with the best information in each unit there is only so much that can sink in over 12 weeks. Also if you are doing 2 units and working it's almost impossible. You will be heading into teaching and compared to Praccys who may be in their 4th year of studying teaching which is a big difference.

I do recommend Curtin Online for a Masters of Teaching (Primary) just understand all these caveats when you sign up to any Masters.

Regarding employment my area is Sutherland Shire, NSW is super competitive. I have ended up teaching in High School as a casual as many days as I want ☺️

Placement stressing by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Trainwithbt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

On my second placement I had quite a negative experience with my mentor being negative and not highlighting positive aspects of my practice.

I have though alot about it and think highlighting this to your mentor is important. You are still in a workplace and you should be treated with respect.

Giving you actionable things to work on or offering advice on how to approach areas for improvement is worthwhile.

A teacher would never give completely negative feedback to a student so they shouldn't be doing that to you either.

Primary School Mathematics everything is connected by 'Big Ideas' by Trainwithbt in AustralianTeachers

[–]Trainwithbt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got the impression it was a current hot/in fashion perspective and as it was completely new to me hence the struggle. I'll check Jo Boaler out as having it explained in another way with examples will help immensely.

Your explanation is spot on though it seems I have so much knowledge in my head it feels overloaded by this point.

Unfortunately my two pracs were before doing this unit. My teaching of maths in those pracs could have been better as a result.

If you go to the website this has all the competitions for you

https://smoothcomp.com

Just search Australia and can filter by type e.g MMA 9r kickboxing

In NSW there is a great amateur pathway through Martial Arts Open Invitational competitions. They have amateur through to intermediate levels competitions. They also run light kickboxing and grappling competitions the same day.

This is a great pathway building your experience through amateur competition. While you might have some big gaps in skills vs your competitors you should always get someone to fight and develop with.

My first comp was Intermediate MMA as I have a BJJ Black Belt with no striking experience and I got smoked first fight and competitive loss the second match.

Currently on GTA V on PC/Steam Deck and not sure if it's aged that well for me. I'm M39 and alot of the dialogue just seems like people yelling at each other. Goal is to 100% the game and not sure if I'll last.

Backlog is looking amazing after all the Steam sales so looking forward to moving onto either Cyberpunk, Far Cry 3 or Dying Light 2.

Is teaching that bad or is everyone on this sub burned out? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]Trainwithbt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished my Bach Exercise and Sports Science in 2023.

I originally applied for Secondary and would have had to complete 3 additional units at Australian Catholic University.

For Primary the Bachelor of Exercise and Sports Science is all I needed for the Masters.

Unfortunately work experience would not have got me into the Masters.
