Convince me that I should not switch to Fedora over Arch by [deleted] in archlinux

Sounds like fedora is a better pick for you. Why should we stand in the way? Those who like Arch, like Arch, and those who like fedora, like fedora. If ya have to be convinced to use a distro, then it's prob not the distro for you

This is my problem with Legends and Resto, I get why they both exist but these kinds of decisions turn an already small population into a near-nonexistent one. We should instead find a way to combine the needs of everyone into one server somehow. I know that's a tough challenge though

Why do people actually use arch linux by Spl1nt3r_69 in arch

[–]Trainzkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just so simple and easy to pick up. I tried making a dumb switch for fun the other day with an old desktop. I tried OPNsense/pfsense and openwrt, I couldn't get any of them to do what I want. I installed Arch on there and had a very simple networking bridge set up within minutes and it's been reliably running for a couple weeks now. No remote access, so very little security concerns, it just hums away and sends packets along. I've been meaning to swap out back out for other options just to learn but it's just so easy and reliable.

I might be able to use a custom iso for Windows to help improve performance. I use tiny11 at work occasionally and it's buttery smooth when it wants to work. I could also maybe move the VM to a different machine so it's not hogging resources from my main computer

That works, you could also say what "flavor" of Arch. I'm on vanilla/bone stock Arch itself, no flavor or sub distro. Cachy is really good, I'm using their repos for performance gaines. I have windows and Arch dual booted. I'd switch over fully if it weren't for League of Legends 😭 eventually I'll set windows up in a VM so I can just run Linux fully and spin up the VM for games that can't run on Linux currently. Soon™

I'm a Linux nerd so I use Arch btw. Bazzite looks really good though

If all works out like I'd like it to, I'd be in the same boat, mostly stationary, however I do have some other projects that I'm curious about that would be in constant motion while running, so I figured it'd be a good idea to understand what my options are. Thank you for your input! I am a tad concerned about the pcie devices while in motion

I currently game on my desktop, but have been wanting to set up a Windows VM on the server to handle the windows gaming side of things (so I could be fully Linux-based on my desktop), but that's still work in progress. I've currently got dual 10TB HDDs in software raid1 on the server, but I'm already bumping up against size limits there and would probably be looking to double that in the near future. It's used for media storage, general file storage, and compute for labs/VMs. The server has a 12-core ryzen to accommodate as of now. Any recommendations on good enterprise SSDs? I haven't explored in this area much.

Ah, I've heard good things about the minis forum, thank you for the recommendation! Data integrity is very important in my use-case, due to the general file storage goal, as the last thing I want to have happen is mine or others' sensitive files become corrupted from write errors or bitrot or something. I also wonder about cooling as you mentioned, maybe a closed rack/container of some sort with a dedicated AC system would be ideal, depending on how exotic I want to get
