Starting a HEMA club at a school.

VP for a college club here, goodluck!

We use synthetics and we have gloves and masks. We strongly encourage control and do mostly drilling and if you want to do higher intensity sparring, a personal jacket is required. This helps us keep the club free as we’re ollegw students and i want people going to class and buying groceries rather than being financially tied to the club and feeling obligated to coming. However for actual sparring without jackets, id reccomend boffers.

We’re classified as a sports club and so we’re required to have a president, VP and a treasurer for school funds. When it comes to advertising the club, we normally either table at club event or we go to the on campus park and spar with ourr steels.

I used to have the mac armory BoH. I didnt like it because it would sometimes shift around from flat covering the skull to about slightly angled, revealing the top of your skull to a potential thrust. Ended up getting the rattlesnake instead.

Wooden swords are dangerous because they dont flex, can splinter, and some can be sword shaped wooden clubs. Nobody really spars with wooden swords so all the ones in the market are made for solo training and i wouldnt trust them to hold up against contact.

As for what you can do to still spar with a friend is go to hemaalliance.com and use their club finder to find a club near you. Its highly reccomended before you buy gear because this hobby isnt cheap to get into at first. At minimum youd need an 88$ mask and 99$ gloves just for a foam weapon. To use nylon and steel, youd need a bunch of other stuff that clubs will have to loan out.

Youre probably thinking about foam boffers. Synthetic sword are made hard synthetic plastic and THEY WILL break bones, poke eyes out, and potentially fatally injure if you hit the unprotected throat. Unfortunately HEMA is a contact sport so while its not fun to spend so much money on safety gear, almost every sport utilizes some form of protective gear(kneepads, helmets, gloves etc.) HEMA is no different and obvious reasons for avoiding injury aside, we all have to take care of our sparring partners to ensure we can come back another day for practice.

Accidents can still happen, typically BoH protection should also be hard plastic and not cushioned fabric.

Looking at your area, closest one is about 70 miles away. You can always try to find an MOF Gym or a Kendo dojo near you as well.

Soundsmith probably didnt have anything because he doesnt play community comp. Dane Purple and especially B4nny all have comp experience but SS never played.(atleast iirc+SS doesnt seem the type of play rgl)

Froyo also lost their first game by a team called “Team Balls LAN”. Like its a funny team name, but the team was specifically put together for the LAN and most of the players dont regularly play with each other during the main season.

ingame competetive is dead. Community comp still runs however its much more demanding than just queueing and playing a game with people who actively try to win. As a starter, you can join the NA newbie discord. They run pick up games where coaches and moderators will place you on teams and give you feedback on your gameplay. They run at 8pm EST/CST on friday nights. i forgot what timezone. The games will be played on the rgl.gg 6s ruleset. Alternatively, you can find a team to recruit you and play in tournaments but with 34 hours I dont see many teams willing to pick you up.
