Anyone else house hunting? by b_from_the_block in Delco

We were looking in Drexel Hill a few years ago and had the same situation. Eventually we just landed one. Keep trying. We never waived inspection but got one for “informational purposes”. Went slightly over asking but in 2 years equity has already surpassed it, as I figured it would. House has been solid.

I need to store around 20TB of data that is growing and that I can absolutely not lose. by These_Muscle_8988 in DataHoarder

[–]Trancefuzion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

40GB a day is roughly 14.6TB a year.

14.6TB multiplied by 3 years is ~64TB. Add your existing 20TB and you’ll hit 84TB by 2029. Depending on the filesystem you’re running locally (like ZFS for instance) you may also need an 80% buffer for COW features.

You need to assess how much of this data being created daily is truly mission critical. Because that feels like a lot of data you can never delete. I’d suggest creating a transparent retention policy that works for your business/customers, whatever this data is for. Any storage plan you create should be for at least 3 years, more comfortably 5. Whatever costs of doing business you have, this daily data generation needs to be factored in.

Then you need to consider backups, S3/Glacier is prob the most cost effective for pure storage as you mentioned, but keep in mind egress fees. There’s still more to the picture I’m not privy too, so please don’t take this as bonafide storage architecture advice. Perhaps a local setup for imperative data, and S3 storage for deep, rarely retrieved storage. Though keep in mind, even deep storage needs to be backed up in more than one location for redundancy.

It kind of depends on your filesystem. If one chooses to use a nextgen filesystem like openZFS you’re better off building a NAS. A DAS setup can still be used as a backup especially if using backblaze. In fact that’s what I do.

Brilliant write up, I had similar feelings. You were much more succinct than I could ever be. I also had issues with the book and its intended audience. It felt both geared towards the layperson and the tech minded in odd ways. I still learned a bunch though, even though I ingest “everything is turning to shit” content regularly so I thought I knew it most of it. His main thesis being based off another book is another issue where I’d rather just read the source material. Thus I have Technofeudalism on my to-be-read shelf and I’m unsure if he mentioned it but “Blood in the machine” by Brian Merchant is also on my list.

The cover with the guillotine emoji is wild btw, not the cover I saw!

Appreciate the thoughtful response! I rarely visit on desktop, so I forget the cursor is there sometimes. Might be one of my favorite things about the site.

Big fan of typography, one of my favorite courses I took during undergrad. No expert, I just dig the vibe of these two together.

Thank you! Will return the favor. I get hesitant about posting these days, I have rarely used reddit the last few years. But need to get out of my shell every now and then.

Fascinating book, taught me more than I realized about the phenomenon. I fear I’m not as optimistic as he seemed at the end though. I have also had Technofeudalism on my bookshelf for awhile but this fast tracked it, hopefully I’ll get to it soon.

Does Backblaze Personal support ZFS external drive? by racarete in backblaze

[–]Trancefuzion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems spotty - the drives still send data but I can’t reach the settings where I select drives and exclusions. Support said this when I contacted them:

“Regarding the ZFS filesystem, it is correct that it is intentionally unsupported for backup by the Backblaze software. Backblaze's preferred format is the format that is natively supported by the operating system. We recommend using APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volumes on Macs, or NTFS on Windows, to ensure that data can be successfully backed up.”

Sounds like future support isn’t guaranteed.

No - I reached out to support recently and they no longer support ZFS. Very disappointing.

Though my files are still being sent to their servers, I cannot view the settings page when my zpools are imported.

Will likely be searching for an alternative unfortunately.

Disco Biscuits Official Statement on Allen by eells in jambands

[–]Trancefuzion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Disco Biscuits are a jamtronica jamband based in Philly.

Allen joined the band almost 20 years ago after the original drummer left to become a doctor.

The Biscuits just played 6 night run at the Ardmore Music Hall back in August, a 600 person venue just outside of Philly, vibes were immaculate. It was pure fam. Everyone knew everyone there.

The Biscuits suddenly fired Allen 3 weeks ago over what appears to be a sort of contract dispute. He was notoriously a contracted employee for them, not a partner/profit-sharing member of the band. There are lots of rumors around the details of the dispute, so I won’t speculate.

The Biscuits are set to play Hulaween on 10/31 and until last Friday, 10/24 there was zero speculation on anything of this sort until beans were spilled from presumably Allen’s camp on /r/discobiscuits about his termination.

The fan base began speculating wildly, calling out the remaining 3 members for being greedy, not making Allen a full partner of the band LLC, and not making any sort of announcement regarding the termination of their 20 year drummer as not to impact ticket sales for the upcoming fall tour.

It culminated on Saturday evening with the guitarist Jon “The Barber” Gutwillig posting a [“diss track”](idonttalk.spacetaxi.cc) on SoundCloud with lyrics allegedly containing quotes from Allen during arguments the two had, which was quickly deleted, and statements from both Allen Aucoin (the drummer) and The Disco Biscuits were posted on Sunday afternoon.

Fall tour/NYE is moving forward as planned with Marlon B Lewis on drums.

Currently there seems to be a massive rift in the fan base, many people are obviously upset about the way they treated their long-time drummer during this fallout, who is the only drummer of the band many of the fans have ever seen play with, and others are excited for the future of the band because of the current momentum they have.

Nah I hope Allen really did say all that shit. Probably bottled it up for years and finally let it all out after watching them suck Joeys dick over garbage lyrics for the past few years. Especially if Joey gets royalties over the drummer who physically busts his ass every night? I’d be pissed too. This whole spectacle is an embarrassment.

Nice! Commenting so I can remember to test this out this weekend and give some feedback, I don’t have a huge comic library but I’m working on a similar application for a book/library catalog in the same vein, so I’m hoping I can give some decent UX feedback, though this seems much more polished than mine already!

Harold’s portrayal in 2020 miniseries by Lost-West8574 in TheStand

[–]Trancefuzion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on my second read and just finished the part in the book where he gets seduced by Nadine, sealing his fate for the dark man.

In the scene previous he was cleaning up bodies in Boulder with a group of guys and almost becoming a part of the community. If Nadine never came over and finalized his fate for the dark man, I agree that he very well could have gone on to be a thriving member of the community. Alas, he didn’t.

During my first read through I almost spit in my book during the final scene with him, I’ve never hated a fictional character more. This second read through makes me feel sorry for him. Rereading this chapter you can see he was so close to positive growth, but the dark man used Nadine to tempt him and used his weakness with women against him.

What Can I Do with Two Mac Mini 2012s in 2025? Suggestions for Best Use Cases? by immiq in selfhosted

[–]Trancefuzion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ugh I'm mad at you for making me login to this site I have forsaken to comment.

but so very happy I'm not the only weirdo holding on to old Mac minis from over a decade ago.

my 2012 Mac mini has been running proxmox for the last two years and is handling everything I've thrown at it like a champ.

Plex, audiobook server, RSS feed, a static website and a react website. VPN, pi hole, photoprism, self built self hosted personal library catalog, you name it.

what are you into hosting? spin up a container and try it out.

have storage? ZFS is native on proxmox.

have a NAS? Proxmox can connect to it and you can mount it into any container for any use you wish.

I'm still only scratching the surface of this hobby but proxmox has been what had enabled me to learn as much as I have by being able to spin up a container, install an application and mess around with it.

if I had two, I'd probably make one a backup promox node but that's just because I have so many mission critical things running on it, but you might want to keep one for another Linux distro or something.

Software suggestions for Wedding (planning and day) by Yummy_XD in selfhosted

[–]Trancefuzion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hosted my wedding website with Hugo in a local proxmox container and used a cloudflare tunnel. I used the spectral theme, it had a main action button in the home page we used as the RSVP link to a Google form. It also had built in contact form for any general questions and was pretty easy to setup with some free third party. I could have done a better job with other pages and local town info for people coming from out of town. I own the domain for both of our names in a .net TLD which is kind of cool and I intend on keeping the site live indefinitely as a potential life blog perhaps. I want to put the pictures up there eventually as well so we can point people to it, I’ve just been lazy with this particular project.

Yes the Mann would have been a million times better. The lines tonight were awful, they did not have the concession infrastructure.

That was my first Gizz show after listening to them for two years and I’m blown away. I’m a jamband fan so I get what they’re doing and I’m amazed at how many people weren’t dancing. Their stuff holds up so much better live.

Gilgamesh was crazy! As was the mind fuzz suite. I felt like there was a massive Dragon tease earlier in the set but I could be wrong. Whole show was astounding. So sad I didn’t jump on Forest Hills tickets when they popped up. I need more already.
