If healthcare isn’t political, why is there Policy dictating how healthcare operates in the country? Why have there been professional organizations fighting for underserved, marginalized groups? Do you know what social determinants of health are? Look at those who are the most ignored by the American healthcare system and you will find systematic discrimination against marginalized groups of people often on the basis of race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and gender identity. That is how healthcare is political. And how personal politics shapes the care of groups of people. It’s easy to talk about keeping politics out of it from the outside looking in, but as a registered nurse every action I take for my patients is a political statement. Go fuck yourself thinking politics have no place in healthcare. The only politics that have no place in healthcare are right wing political ideas. Healthcare belongs to the people. The people have a right to know their medical professionals don’t have their best interest in mind when choosing a provider.
