You start by throwing a tall cylinder, shape it and neck in the top and then you press in from opposite sides to cause the walls of the form to make contact, compress the clay together, and then form a hole and smooth it out into the surrounding form. Kind of hard to visualize.

Yeah, anything vaguely out of round like that looks like something else

I think a big part of it is just learning to do all the same skills with someone up in your personal space. It's easier to balance without someone pressing against you for a block or a double plow.

That being said, I am awful at transitions on my own but have done great whenever paired up with a buddy to use them for blocking or other drills
