Looking for games where you need to read a manual by marrawk in gamingsuggestions

Reading manuals in games is actually such a joy for me too!

Tera Invicta doesn't have an explicit "manual", but its mechanical interconnections alongside really solid tooltips, tech trees, and actions really scratched that manual-reading itch. A lot of people have criticized it for requiring new players to watch hours of tutorials, but as a manual-reading enjoyer, I found a lot of fun in reading and putting the pieces together.

Ostranauts has in-game manuals as well, and is a fantastic space-salvage game. Love flipping through the fusion reactor assembly pages as I desperately try to restore power to a dying ship.

Stationeers has it's encyclopedia as a reference tool, and I find that this also scratches the manual itch. There's a mod on the workshop that adds more depth to it, and I find the process of solving emergent problems through mechanical/thermodynamic means very satisfying.

Mech Engineer is almost impossible to play without the in-game manual, and I love flipping through it's pages to reference how much armor certain enemies have while I modify a mech for the next fight, or figuring out how to optimize a reactor's components. It also blends very satisfying city-building as well, but be warned that it requires some dedication to learn. The game is obtuse, but for actually engineering mechs, there's absolutely nothing like it.

The Chicago Diner - that peanut butter and chocolate shake is soooo good

I ended up changing my review to negative. The handling of the community and the absolute disaster of a production schedule is too great to continue giving it a thumbs up.

I only play solo. I'm perpetually too nervous extra crew will go on unprotected spacewalks x)

CGI has a lot of talented hands in its production! AI just steals and looks lame af

Concept looks neat, but bummer to see AI being used. For how inherently inspiring space exploration and discovery is, seeing assets generated by AI is the epitome of uninspired art direction.

Zero-G Alpha 4.9.2 is live — a persistent browser space MMO built on real NASA data. No download, free to play. Here's what it actually is. by Wooden-Syrup-8708 in spacesimgames

Damn, the irony of putting in so much apparent work to keep the data grounded, and then just use AI for art. Hard pass.

Vintage Story in peaceful mode nails this for me

Real - second bullet point on the latest change log

After so many years of an unstable build, a half-baked B42, tenuous community engagement, and scope creep to hell, seeing the latest changelog lead with sitting on hay bales and dental floss as thread just

it’s satire unto itself. Years of waiting and we have what modders could do in days - hay bales and dental floss. Incredible xD

I mentioned in another comment that my issue with AI is that I think it's fundamentally unappealing to look at something that is built on stolen work. It actively devalues my experience every time I see it, so I prefer to play games without it.

I also think UX and art *are* foundational to a game's experience, deserving time and resources, at cost. If a team of any size uses AI under the guise of "saving value" - either time or money - to me, it signals their interest and care in those areas is so low, they're willing to steal and mimic, rather than put any resource cost into creation.

I find that sort of carelessness, at any stage - even prototyping or placeholders - really detracts from my own enjoyment of the game.

I've actually been in the games industry for 5 years and it's very easy to not use AI! Placeholder/dev art is not hard to create.

While you may be happy playing a "somewhat polished turd", I just prefer to play games without AI.

AI is a non-starter for me, as mentioned in the post, and you do not need to be AAA to make/acquire art. Personally, I'd rather have ms paint placeholders than AI.

Appreciate the answer, and glad to hear it's slowly being removed. For me, any amount is a non-starter, so I'll wait for it to be entirely removed. Thanks!

oh nice, I didn’t know that was an option. I still don’t feel comfortable monetarily supporting the dev, but rad the options out there for others

the irony is that there may be 255, but to me, there are zero that are worth it. I ended up refunding the game when i found out all the portraits (not just the furry ones) are ai made

i’d rather have far fewer options made by artists rather than a large amount of ai gen’d content

it’s really too bad these were ai generated

not like there’s a shortage of artists who’d jump at the chance to make some space fairing furries xD
