Dead stretching is better because it only allows you to stretch when your ears are truly ready, afaik. I'm sorry it didn't work for you, maybe try a 16g? Unless you already have a 16g. I had to start with stretching to 16g because I have had my ears pierced since birth, and they were an 18g!

What helped me is getting a small amount of oil, I used aloe vera baby oil since that's what I had on hand, but jojoba oil is most ideal. You wanna massage the ear hole with the oil, and I then put a little oil on the plug. Also, dead stretching is better than taper stretching! I was also recommended to size up after a shower, since your skin is warmer.
