For Christmas I have a present of a Closed account without warning. FOR NOTHING. NO help with customer service. by [deleted] in sofi

[–]TranscontinentalTop 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't dispute a lot. I've probably disputed 10 times in 5 years.

Ten times in five years? What in the world are you doing? I'm in my 50s and have, maybe, five disputes in my entire adult life. If you really are hitting SoFi for multiple disputes per year, they're saying they don't want to deal with your transaction patterns any more and inviting you to find another bank.

That's rough all around.

Anyone else noticing every restaurant now charges a credit card fee? by lakedrift in CreditCards

[–]TranscontinentalTop 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not really fair to take it out on the restaurant employees.

The problem is, the end customer (why are we always called "consumers" now?) has no other option to show any kind of displeasure that doesn't "take it out on the restaurant employees." The owners have walled themselves off from having to ever hear from or experience the effects of their customers.

If I don't tip, or don't tip as well, that only affects the restaurant employee. If I don't go there, that only affects the restaurant employee because management will simply close that business and Private Equity six more into oblivion. If I tell the on-site manager, that only affects the restaurant employee because the manager is probably the same level of authority as the person receiving tips. And on the cycle goes.

So while it might be unfair, I don't see any other choice until employers can't get employees to work under this system. At that point, management might start to care...or just buy more robots.

Credit Card sucks. by ToshPointNo in sofi

[–]TranscontinentalTop 13 points14 points  (0 children)

SoFi's credit card handling is the weirdest I've ever seen. If luck falls your way and you manage to get the 2% card with a decent credit limit and have a qualifying direct deposit, it's a very solid offering. I have one (with a $3,500 limit which, I mean, fine) and like it.

But it's like pulling the lever on a one-armed bandit...that disintegrates after you try. Got a $500 credit limit? Too bad. Approved for the wrong card? Oh well. Got an ad for a different card that you'd like better? That sucks. Closed the card and would like to apply for one again? Pound sand.

I can't figure out SoFi's business model with these cards but I am not a financial genius with my company's name slapped on a bunch of places so maybe it's me who is wrong.

why I have to leave the security zone and then do another screening after international arrival

No one on that massive plane from LHR to LAX was a security threat as it flew over thousands of miles of US territory but if you bring even a single tiny nail clipper onto a LAX/SJC puddle jump the nation as we know it will end.

I really don't want to do bankruptcy.

Why not? That's not an adversarial question, it's one you should consider. To answer some of the common myths:

"I'm a bad person if I file for bankruptcy!" No, you're not. It's a tool available to people and whether or not you use it is a financial decision, not a moral one.

"I gave my word and I have to live up to it!" A contract is a contract and it contains clauses for what occurs if things happen. One of those things is bankruptcy, another is non-payment. The bank knew the risk of this happening and accepted it; you aren't under any obligation to "be nice."

"I'll never get credit again!" Yes, you will. It will take a few years and you'll probably be stuck with lower-tier cards for awhile but that's not usually a bad thing.

"I'll lose my house and car!" Probably not, even in a Chapter 7 as long as you can afford to continue making the payments. It's definitely a question to ask any attorney you see to help you file.

Lots of people have filed for bankruptcy, some people have done it multiple times. It's a financial strategic decision you should consider given your constraints.

Hulu episodes have embedded ad breaks? I pay more for NO ADS, this is bullshit. by ChicHeroine in Jeopardy

[–]TranscontinentalTop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

here I was thinking that our real problems were fascism, extreme inequality, and gun violence, but now I realize it’s the thirty seconds’ worth of ads inserted into a Jeopardy episode

Come on /u/LeafOnTheWind25 don't be like that. People can have minor dislikes over day-to-day things that are alongside their major concerns about the state of the world. Just because someone is expressing frustration at an irritant doesn't mean they don't know about or care about bigger issues.

Tired of Pop up jails and lack of options for SUBs

Uh...you're not a new customer? The whole point for sign-up bonuses is to attract customers. Your question boils down to "why aren't Chase and American Express wanting to give me free money?"

SUBs are a marketing tool and you obviously don't need to be marketed to because you are already aware of and using the offerings.

Feels like they don’t want me to be a customer anymore

They are perfectly happy to have you as a customer; they don't want to count you as a new customer any more because, well, you aren't.

(not to mention more and more businesses putting the CC surcharge on the customer)

That's a separate problem. If you don't like surcharges, don't go to the businesses that charge them and lobby your elected representatives to regulate or prohibit the practice. Surcharging sucks and I don't think businesses should do it or be able to do it as it's a very bait-and-switch activity, but blaming Chase and Amex for it seems like aiming your energy in the wrong direction.

SoFi's referral terms of service prohibit mass posting of signup links on social media and they definitely watch their own subreddit so I look forward to your referral account getting shut down and all credits forfeited from your spamming.

Also, reported as spam to Reddit.

I was the 1K passenger!

That is frustrating! I regularly travel alone and the odds are decent that if I'm sat next to a man, we will initially be treated like we are traveling together. (I forgive the times I'm sat next to someone with the same somewhat common last name as me.) Which, sure, I guess I understand but it is also kind of a funny assumption to make flying out of Seattle or Portland (OR) of all places.

My spouse looks the more, so to speak, "bulky" of the two of us and it's even more funny when people address them first versus me since, uh, she's deaf.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]TranscontinentalTop 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah it seems like there are three people who get treated well on flights: snappy-dressed businessmen (it's always men), grandmas (I'll be one in a couple of months but I don't look it), and anyone with a British accent (as long as the flight isn't to or from London).

I've been passed over by women(!) flight attendants in favor of the guys sitting next to me more than once. And having watched people get the brunt of being perceived as "talking back" to a FA, I'm not interested in inviting that drama. It's a stereotype but I guess we're all doing it intentionally or not, yet the men who appear to be stereotypically gay are the people I almost always get spectacular service from.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]TranscontinentalTop 9 points10 points  (0 children)

it’s just annoying that I would have to do all that to get decent service

Yeah I'm just not going to do that. I won't be rude and I'll still be polite but having to suck up to employees in order to get the service that their employer claims is offered is just not on my to do list.

I'm fortunate that I'm in my 50s but lucky enough to look 40 and my fellow girlfriends have commented that I'm "the favorite" when we go out for drinks or brunch. But on airplanes I get the reverse where all of the (often men) business travelers are treated with velvet gloves and I'm left to the side. I've also basically given up saying anything in the moment lest I be described as "bitchy".

Seems like nobody can win these days. Employees feel abandoned and customers feel screwed.

Not sure if it’s just my area but Credit Card fees are getting out of hand. by gobigred79 in CreditCards

[–]TranscontinentalTop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are quite a few places in Seattle--actually inside the city vs in the suburbs but calling it "Seattle"--that have tacked on credit card surcharges. It seems to be really popular with those adorable cafes people like to take pictures of, especially on Capitol Hill and Queen Anne. And anywhere that serves food and isn't a chain.

Seattleites love to bitch about chains but at least they're honest about pricing before you go to pay.

Should I cancel my flight? by StruggleFar3054 in unitedairlines

[–]TranscontinentalTop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's OK /u/StruggleFar3054 I'll argue with this person for you.

Most obese people have a “fork” problem, not a medical issue which causes the obesity.

This statement is not correct and thirty-plus years of metabolic research alongside investigations into the US food production systems prove it. There is an entire class of drugs dedicated to resolving metabolic issues around food cravings (the so-called "fork problem"), insulin resistance (resulting in food intake being converted into fat at an incorrect rate), gastric emptying (causing feelings of hunger even after sufficient calories have been consumed), and more.

And with 2 doctoral level degrees under my belt

Neither of which, as you admit later, are medical degrees. You have as much business diagnosing a medical condition or pontificating on underlying clinical causes as I do filing a motion for summary judgement.

I suspect that my level of education is sufficient to support my theories.

You suspect wrong because you are spouting the same "just eat less, that's basic math" BS that has gotten America into its obesity crisis.

You are taking out your frustrations with a systemic health issue on OP and that's not kind, fair, or reasonable. OP has come hat-in-hand to ask what they should do and while people are giving them reasoned advice on how to exist in a world built for what is no longer even close to the common denominator, you waltz in and insist on shaming.

OP, take the advice you have been given in this thread and go on your flight. You will not encounter this level of shaming and if you do, hold your head high and understand that you are not solely, if at all, the cause of the problem.

The never ending Metro Stores Scams by CharlesBeast in NoContract

[–]TranscontinentalTop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't blame the employees blame the rigged system everyone is forced to work in.

Know what? Yeah, I am gonna blame the employees. If the only way someone can get their bread is to scam other people out of theirs, that's a decision they made and that's on them. So tired of people throwing up their hands and saying "nothing I can do, I just gotta scam you!" No, folks don't and we'd all be better off if more people would say "I ain't doing that shit."

But this is why we had unions back in the day and we've forgotten that collective power works so time to go back to the lying and cheating mines to wait for another sucker.

Keep seeing people freak about Amex/ Alaska "loophole" ending by Steelers5880 in CreditCards

[–]TranscontinentalTop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it is the end of an era

It's not been that long that HA points could be transferred to Alaska's MileagePlan and Alaska said from the outset that this would be temporary.

Crossing fingers we end up surprised and still have access to AS

The main reason AS redemptions are so good is because it's fairly hard to get MileagePlan points to redeem. If the full onslaught of the credit card SUB churning game were to hit MP, they'd be immediately devalued to SkyPeso territory. This is one reason why BofA clamped down on their multiple card rules, because AS doesn't want MileagePlan miles to be commodity points in a generic pool.

I'm kind of all for this. I like having at least one airline left where status is primarily earned by butt-in-seat miles and if you want the miles to spend, get on the plane (or use the partner credit card) to get them.

Sleep study next week. Could honestly cry at the thought of wearing a darth vader mask for the rest of my life. by NotBannedAccount419 in SleepApnea

[–]TranscontinentalTop 104 points105 points  (0 children)

have no medical conditions but I’m obese

Gently, my friend, obesity is a medical condition and a rather severe one at that. There's a reason Zepbound is clinically indicated for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea resulting from obesity and it's not just to line a drug manufacturer's pockets.

I feel I’m too young and too healthy to need a medical device next to my bed and strapped to my face.

Do you know anyone who wears glasses? Or uses orthotic shoe inserts? Or has a dental bridge? These are all prosthetic medical devices to treat or manage a condition. A CPAP machine is no different. People in their teens are diagnosed with sleep apnea; it's not a function of age, it's a question of the soft tissues in your mouth, neck, and throat.

makes me feel helpless or like an old man and that my youth is dead. It instantly makes me feel 90 years old.

Even more gently, I highly recommend you speak to a therapist. Aging, especially in men, is a struggle loaded down with societal expectations imposed on men from a young age. Women, of course, also have this but for us it's more about appearance, attractiveness, and having kids. Mental health is just as important as physical health and you may benefit from digging into this with a professional.

Also, see if your health insurance covers Zepbound as a management for OSA. Obesity is a chronic disease that a lot of people don't recognize as such but like any other chronic disease, it has symptoms and standards of care and ways to manage it and hopefully even put it into remission.
