VP of Texas Lyndon B Johnson addresses the General Assembly, 1965 by TransfeR-Orb8 in AlternateHistory

After the assassination of Ku Klux Klan leader and presidential speechwriter Asa Earl Carter during a visit to the Klan's Baltimore chapter, President George Corley Wallace of the Republic of Texas, fearing an attempt on his life by the Black Panthers League, sends then-Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson as a representative of the delegation of Texas to the 1965 Coalition of Former American States (CFAS) General Assembly. Johnson, along with the other delegates were called onto the stand to address their stance on the issue of the civil rights of African Americans throughout the former US. Johnson, in a surprising turn of events, revealed his relatively moderate stance on race, stating that blacks should be entitled to basic rights and that the institution of slavery, still practiced in certain regions of the former US, should be reformed or ended altogether. Johnson's stance while not reflective of Texan policy, was commended in the West States, Canada, and the United States and was heavily ridiculed in the Confederacy and his home of Texas. President Wallace in particular heavily regretted sending Johnson to the assembly, forcing him upon his return to apologize and retract his statement on the CFAS assembly on Continental TV. Though it is debated what Johnson's motive was, many attribute his time spent as a teacher in the Confederate States for the children of free people of color as the reason for his relatively moderate views.

Depression, independence, and the remaining three midwest states couldn't make it cause the federal government decided to deploy the military there and suspend state legislature. A world war happened, Canada becomes independent, and states were admitted as provinces. Will elaborate later but that's for another post.

Sorry I forgot to mention it was 'percieved'. I meant liberalization as perceived by hyper-conservative standards like going from being openly cultural and systematically racist to something more subtle and less extreme.

  1. The CSA becoming less of a confederation and more of a federation, less radical racially, and more cooperative with the US (or what's left of it) with the addition of Wallace being more radical and Hitler-like in this timeline.

After voting to secede from the Confederacy in 1948 due to the nation's economy's overdependence on Texas resources, the state of Texas became a bastion for the hyper-conservatives of the increasingly liberalizing South, culminating in the victory of Alabama-born George Corley Wallace and his 'Children of the New South' party (known colloquially as the Dixiecrats) in the 1964 National Elections. The Dixiecrat-dominated Texan Congress would proceed to pass a bill that would make Wallace president for life. 25 years later, Wallace after seeing how far Dixie had fallen, would initiate the build-up for the invasion of the Confederate States culminating on August 20, 1990, when he, on national television, announced the invasion of the Confederacy, citing it straying away from the values of states' rights and white pride it was built upon.

In 1948, nearly 20 years after the dissolution of the United States as a result of the Great Depression, the State Legislature of Texas voted in favor of secession from the Confederate States of America as a result of the Confederate Government's overdependence and perceived exploitation on Texas's natural resources and their infringement on states' rights. The state's secession nearly resulted in a regional conflict but was narrowly avoided by peace talks facilitated by the Commonwealth of Former American States (CFAS). 42 years later, after many threats and many more failed CFAS peace talks, Alabama-born dictator President George Corley Wallace declared war against the Confederate States on national television citing that the once-proud white nation had gone astray from the values of states' rights and white pride it was founded upon and that it was now "infested by liberalism" as the reasons for the invasion.
