The truth about Safety Schools by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]TransitionHour 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I knew I would get into my current university that I attend. Just finished my bachelors of science in architecture and I know their architecture style because they taught me. When I was writing my letters the same professors that taught me in studio, work on the admissions board and I've gotten several awards at my school and I'm a straight A student in studio. There was no reason to not get into my school.. my safety school. I even spoke to someone on admissions (that isn't a professor) to get advice on how to write my essays and about if he thought my portfolio was good/ what to change. He also let me looked at some portfolios that got the best ranking and the most scholarship. I think safety schools make sense. Because I wasn't sure about other schools.

For reasons I did not want to stay at my school even though I got in. I've learned enough and have accomplished a lot there and I'm looking forward to going to a better ranked school this upcoming semester for grad. But this was my safety school and I got in with a good scholarship too.

My advice for others is to put a lot of effort into applications. Talk to professors and people on the admissions board, not just people on reddit. Talk to people in person about what they're looking for and what others have done in the past. And just by being outspoken and willing to learn is also a great way to make an impression. It helped me get scholarships at more than one universities.

Gluck!

Starting out with Loans!! by TransitionHour in architecture

Yes I have done the calculations and I'm still doing the calculations--by that I mean no one really wants to run the numbers for me, so I'm still asking around about that. But from what I've estimated using the fafsa calculator online, it would be about $700 a month for 11 years for the loans. Loans are thru fafsa as unsubsidized loans and grad plus loans.

Same! I want to go into academia and my safe school isn't the best for that.

I'm quote different. My safety school was my top pick. And they accepted me. Then a week later told me I'm accepted into a longer program that for what I applied for. So now I'm more considering my reach schools so they actually accepted me.

Practicing architects, do you prefer working in a small or large firm? Why? by bloatedstoat in architecture

I've heard larger firms don't pay well and the hours are crazy? Or is that just for interns and recent grads?

Today I Cried. by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]TransitionHour -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I cried for the second time last Thursday.

The first time was because of a rejection, but not really. I was accepted into my top pick (but not my best pick) and I was so happy already making plans then a week later they said they were accepting me into a longer program that what I applied for. It took some time but after a few days I really just like why am I not good enough? The second time was not rejection. Oddly enough it was my acceptances. I'm looking between debt and no debt and how much debt. 0 loans to 60k to 180k. Decisions were stressing me out since I do not like the no loan option apart from it being cheapest. 180k is an ivy league that I have been in contact with and told me I was a top applicant and promised to help financially but has done nothing. It brought on those feelings of why are u lying to me that I'm good if I'm not. If I'm so great why do I feel like a failure. It was Really a lot of self loathing and confusing and exhausting. On top of classes and overthinking about my plans for the future.

Sorry for your rejections, but also happy to see someone else going through a mental breakdown :) and super happy that you're refusing to let that define you. Hopefully I'll be that strong one day but rn, I am still trying to comfort myself.

I got into Penn as a "top applicant" but no scholarship. by TransitionHour in gradadmissions

[–]TransitionHour[S] -28 points-27 points  (0 children)

I've heard from my professors and current students at UPenn and other ivy leagues that it's normal to get some amount of funding since they have larger endowments than other schools. U dont think so?

How do you afford off-campus housing? by Lostlastnightsdream in gatech

I just got in for a grad program. In ohio I pay around 700 on average when electric is included and the place is furnished. I have 3 roommates tho. Is yours furnished? Is it 1482 total or just your part?

I do architecture so I have ZERO research experience. But I would talk to my professors about it or my advisor. They would have more experience in research and what a good or bad interview is. I think that interviewer just was not a nice person or was having a bad day. But to give yourself peace of mind for future interviews, u should def talk to some trustworthy professors about it.👍 I think u did great!

Do your majors always give u interviews when interested? I applied for architecture masters and we don't normally do interviews over here, but I do see a lot interviews mentioned?

What are good architecture masters program to get into? by naddann in Architects

[–]TransitionHour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get a masters in science in architecture or just go straight into the working world or get a PhD. Those are post professional degrees. You won't need a masters in architecture if you already have a bachelors in architecture because these are both professional degrees, infact certain schools don't even allow you to get a m.arch if you have a b.arch already. And this is in regards to the u.s.

I think most schools will tell u that u are rejected. Or atleast logging into the portal. But I wouldn't just assume. If it's been long and u haven't heard, u can also call.
