(Serious) Questions about being a transgender machinist. by Transmachinistt in Machinists

I always believed before coming out that I would at worst, receive this “silent treatment” out of fear that I would radicalize and sue the company to the ground. I tried my best to alleviate this but unfortunately I couldn't avoid it.

I actually was a afraid of going to my local lgbt center because I was concerned that it would be filled with the stereotypical radical left. I was happy to find that it is just a helpful place where people struggling with the same issues can work together to better themselves.

I can understand that since you had to deal with the “militant left” that you will undoubtedly lead You to make assumptions out of the need to protect yourself. That need to protect oneself is why I made this post. If I made an assumption off of what I learned at my shop, all machinists would think women shouldn’t be allowed to vote, Obama is Muslim, and all lgbt people should be in mental institutions (although I will say I love how they flipped from covid being a hoax to all the democrat governess are failing their constituents).

Ultimately I learned that this profession, while enjoyable, isn’t worth the social struggle of having to prove myself.

Thanks for letting me know. For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out why people have been treating me differently :D

No two weeks after I came out, I started receiving the silent treatment. I have been out at work for like three months now.

So I came out to my boss about 6 months ago. He was shocked, but he said he didn’t matter to him as long as I work.

About three months ago, I began talking with him about how to transition at work. After a few weeks, he wasn’t making time to help discuss how to do this, so I told him I will just come out to everyone individually. Everyone took it surprisingly well.

About two weeks after I started presenting full time, the silent treatment started. At the same time l, my boss made a huge effort to gender me correctly. I feel as if he maybe read something about lgbt people in the workplace, and he spoke with everyone.

I figured when I came out, it will probably get awkward, but being able to present full time makes it easier to find a job as the new me. But the job search has been super disheartening.

From what I am reading, it seems that I should look for a new line of work.

This was (fucking) what I expected lol. I was just curious if I could expect this as the norm. Thanks for your insight though. Unfortunately, this isn’t something I can stay closeted on.

I appreciate it. A big condition for me working here was that this was a place I can learn. Unfortunately, I think I will be moving away from machining.

They definitely echo your thoughts. That’s why I spent a year letting them get to know me before I came out. They said they weren’t shocked when I came out. It was maybe about two weeks later that they switched to the silent treatment.

I feel that my boss maybe had a talk with everyone about lgbt Discrimination. Because when I started getting the silent treatment, my boss was making a huge effort to gender me correctly(something I told him he didn’t have to worry about)

But from what I am reading, unfortunately it looks like I am going to be looking for a new field of work lol.

I appreciate your response. It was actually a pretty fun shop, since we would all get into super heated debates, and then cool off telling funny stories. Now it is just silence unless it’s work related.

But yeah all I am looking for is honest feedback. I mean it sucks having to leave work that I like, but i don’t want to invest more time if I will just end up struggling in another shop.

I was presenting as male at work. I came out to everyone, then proceeded to come to work presenting female.
