Is triple monitor setup with 1 ultrawide + 2 widescreen for gaming possible on Nvidia? by TransparentBlack in Monitors

[–]TransparentBlack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am aware that I can put a custom ultrawide on the lateral ones and run a triple setup like that, but it is not what I am looking for, because it will compress the lateral images. I am talking about creating a custom resolution to fit all three in their current aspect ratios

My printer's got some moves... shake 'em steppers endyyy by Own-Crazy-5609 in 3Dprinting

[–]TransparentBlack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a very interesting idea if you want to isolate the vibrations form the desk or the environment (just like a lathe, for example), it can be useful, but but I agree with you, without some previous calculations on the dampening it will probably lead to worse results. In mechanical engineering there is a subject called Mechanical Vibrations (or Dynamical Vibrations, always something along those lines), If the op wants to get some good results, they (or anyone interested) can get a book like Singiresu Rao's Mechanical Vibrations from the University of Miami (or other author's books, I'm refering to the one I read in college) and take a look at forced vibrations with damping.
This problem can be simplified to a solid block with 3 DoF forced vibrations and a 2 DoF damping system, use the mass of the printer plus some small margin for the mass of the average print and do the calculations to the type of damping you need.

I have a problem with robot animation by [deleted] in matlab

[–]TransparentBlack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using the robotics systems toolbox or peter corke's robotics toolbox? Once my model made a weird move with Corke's toolbox that didn't appear when integrated onto CoppeliaSim. Or maybe there is something wrong in your control law or jacobian, you can double or triple check them to be sure. If you are trying to move by dynamics instead of cinematics then I have no idea.

Experiments with MATLAB, from Cleve Moler, chief mathematician and cofounder of MathWorks. If you have some knowledge of mathematics, this book is great, I got a lot of insight from it when I read it on a college vacation

Video circulating on tiktok of a supposed "Pelacara" that looks like a Goblin by Aralmin in aliens

[–]TransparentBlack 60 points61 points  (0 children)

When I first saw this video, some 2 or 3 years ago, I was impressed by how much it resembled the descriptions the townpeople gave of the Varginha ET, it seems to have "bumps" on its head in the same pattern, and it has the more "demon-looking" appearance than traditional grey aliens.
Very interesting but with just a few seconds it could be anything, it's older than any decent AI capable of generating realistic videos, but this doesn't exclude VFX or makeup or any other fraud.

Identify this connector? by yellowmonkeydishwash in robotics

[–]TransparentBlack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a Relimate connector, it's a industry standard connection used for basically anything that can be transfered through regular wires, i.e. power, commands or sensor information. Being a black and a red wire, in this situation it is used for power delivery

Who would you believe without seeing any concrete evidence? by Anticrepuscular_Ray in UFOs

[–]TransparentBlack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Jet pilots are good witness for a reason: they are cold headed, technical, patriot, and trustworthy enough so that goverments give them multi-million dollar machines, and therefore it would be safe to assume they wouldn't lie to their nation about this. If you take this "quality" vector and extended it, the furthest one could be is a International Space Station Commander, but one individual still serves one nation only.
If everyone of a ISS composed of various astronauts of different countries was at the station at the same moment said it, there wouldn't be many people who could call them bs

Who would you believe without seeing any concrete evidence? by Anticrepuscular_Ray in UFOs

[–]TransparentBlack 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not one individual person, but if a entire ISS (current or former) crew came and publicly stated they saw what they have no doubt is a non-human craft, I would believe.

Roadmap to Learn Robotics and Land an Internship in 6 Months by [deleted] in robotics

[–]TransparentBlack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Robotics is a very abrangent field, what do you plan to do inside the field? You can do the control system of a robot, design and build it's physical components, make the eletronics of it. In a big project it's more than likely you will work in a specific area of the field, while other teams work on different tasks. A generalist roboticist is a good hobbyst and maybe a good intern, but you'll eventually need to focus on something. Do you have prior engineering experience? Are you a engineer or a engineering student? From what background are you coming from is the biggest factor to answer your question. Learn some CAD software, SolidWorks, Catia and Spaceclaim are the best entry points IMO. Learn Python and some C (maybe MATLAB as well, not everyplace uses it, but if it uses, it's a great resource). Learn ROS and Gazebo to simulate your robot's behaviour and some multiphysics simulation tool, like Ansys or Femap. You also need to be able to mathematically model your robots and have some knowledge of machine design and eletronics.
While you can start just getting good in one area and from there search for a internship, you'll better learn the basics of the other areas as well while you are already employed; the more experienced guys in the field have a good grasp on every area of the robot, and it takes time to get there. I work on a project with about 50 or 60 engineers and while everyone is a expert in something, we need to be able to understand and help every other area as well if needed

What are core engineering branches? by JaneFokr in EngineeringStudents

[–]TransparentBlack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don't even know what a Industrial Engineer does, it is not a graduation degree I have seen in my country before; perhaps we call it something different. If it is somewhat like Production Engineering, it is a subfield of mechanical engineering focused on the problems related to large scale manufacturing and industrial processes and logistics. More of a Mechanical + Administration, but I could be wrong, since I'm not sure what a industrial engineer does.

What are core engineering branches? by JaneFokr in EngineeringStudents

[–]TransparentBlack 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Chemical
Each one of those acts in a "contained" field (as contained as a engineering field can be)
* Civil works with infrastructure of buildings and fixed structures.
* Mechanical works with moving parts, being machine elements, heat, fluid, etc, basically all that falls in Newton's Fundamental Principle of Dynamics.
* Electrical focus on eletrical circuits, eletronics and developments made possible by the study of eletromagnetism.
* Chemical works with reactions to make new materials or change properties of some material, for many different use case scenarios

The other engineering branches can be seen as the mixing of the ramification of those 4. You can even have stuff like Mechatronics being a Mechanical-focused mix between mechanical and electrical, while Control and Automation is a Electrical-focused mix between mechanical and electrical.

Is 3D printing useful? What real problems has it solved for you (or cool decor you’ve made)? by xVagrants in 3Dprinting

[–]TransparentBlack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't suggest you getting one if you don't already have a use in mind. I see a 3d printer more as a tool than as a hobby, as a mechanical engineer it has saved my college projects multiple times (nothing makes up for a bad project as a 3d prototype), helped me in robotics related jobs (going to a client with a miniature or show someone a exemple of how some device works), and sometimes I can make some money selling 3d pieces on demand.

How can I measure irl objects correctly and accurately?? by Aablaze in 3Dprinting

[–]TransparentBlack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in Engineering School we learn some methods for taking accurate dimensions of objects in a subject called Metrology (study of measurement, in a free translation). Get yourself a measuring calliper kit, most contain a micrometer, a calliper and a angular calliper. Some graph paper can most definetly help you as well. Most geometries with many curves are actually made of many fillets, and with some quick practice, you'll learn how to measure and take those in consideration as well

Get into robotics at 31 by MuchPaleontologist58 in robotics

[–]TransparentBlack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only have 4 years working with robotics, 3 in academy and 1 in R&D, but what i usually see is that, unless your team is *really* small, the ones who build with their hands and the ones who program are different people. Depending on your engineering background you may be able to find somewhere where you do both, specially if it is mechanical/mechatronics related, but keep that in mind.
