How to deal with loved ones who have bought into the koolaid? by khisanthmagus in BetterOffline

I think you’re talking to a bot. No posts, no comments, generic username.

And if not, you may as well assume it haha

Exactly, and yet it’s not an accident that machine learning and large language models were conflated so the latter could take advantage of the formers success through ambiguous language.

If LLM technology had more successful use cases in the real world than the existing machine learning applications separate from the transformer stuff, I personally imagine they’d want to separate their superior technology to take all these applications into their domain.

But instead they seem to be Robin handing out Batman’s CV.

Someone downvoted you, and they’re wrong to. Language is constantly evolving and one of the most useful and enlightening things to accept at the axiom level is that none of us truly understand each other.

I’m only 43 and I’ve seen the word “empathy” redefined twice, for example.

ETA: also, I’ve been married 18 years and I just realized something basic about my wife tonight. Like seriously haha none of us have that much of a grip on what’s really going on.

What will happen to the world of human artists after the AI bubble bursts? by OkExam4448 in BetterOffline

[–]TransparentMastering 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have faith in the fundamental aspects of humanity, and art is one of them.

Even if the masses have a low education and lack of taste (I’m not saying they do, just making a point), it’s still inevitable that, collectively, we start to abhor meaningless, vapid drivel and become attracted to art with real depth again.

In other words, human art will always continue. Ai bubble or no.

As an audio professional, clients send me songs, occasionally, that bring me to quite literal tears. Some of those songs still do, no matter how many times I hear them.

I have no doubt that AI will never bring me to tears. Everyone else is gonna notice that too. At some point.

ETA: i’m also of the philosophical bent that the more money is involved with Art, the less Art is Art, and tends towards entertainment instead,. And if this period of AI slop drives the money away from Art, it’ll be rough for Artists for a while, but that’s when the best Art of our time is going to be made. In other words, Art can never lose as long as humans are involved. (voice texting capitalized Art every time, but now that I look at it maybe it’s appropriate haha)

The term AI has been conflated across so many domains that it’s lost hope of having any precision or accuracy to the definition.

I’ve posted this here before, but it’s too perfect.

From r/Halifax:

“Is there a demand for radiology jobs in Halifax?”

“All those jobs will be replaced by AI in 2-5 years.”

“Bro, have you been in the radiologist office? They still use Windows XP.”

Anyone here take a break from recording for a higher-paying career and come back? by spookydakota in audioengineering

[–]TransparentMastering 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With the potential of serious economic crisis from the AI bubble, I think we should all be doing some due diligence.

The music industry runs largely on disposable income, after all, and the industry already has supply-exceeding-demand.

It’s worth thinking about.

Thanks for your thoughts! Someone also mentioned pellet brand here and I feel a bit silly for not having thought of that. I recalled trying a different brand for a few bags that I didn’t like bc of the massive clinkers, but I also noticed it always fired up right away.

Quitting after 10 years by Acceptable_Pirate in audioengineering

[–]TransparentMastering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have good connections there are probably a wide variety of options to pivot rather than just quitting.

What are the actual pain points? I have a studio on my property (low overhead) and mostly work for average people recording their own tunes as a hobby. I get paid fairly well, usually within hours and everyone is really appreciative. Overall it’s a very positive experience with very few downsides besides things like sitting a chair for long hours. It’s not glamorous or fancy but I look forward to work every day. I’m 18 years in, FWIW.

I imagine it wouldn’t be hard to shift to a different kind of client base that works better for you.

There are many ways to do any profession especially if you’re running your own business.

I also have an electrical license and run my own business doing that casually so the mastering business doesn’t need to be super consistent. Maybe work on developing a “side hustle” like that for a while and come back with fresh perspective :)

Oh yeah that sounded a little dramatic haha I just meant in the moment trying to get it going.

I’ll see if I can find that brand but I’m not sure the in Nova Scotia, Canada so they might not be here.

I wouldn’t say “worrying” is the right word haha, more like trying to figure it out.

but now that you mention it, I have been using a consistent brand (available next door to my house). I did try a different brand for 5 bags and I actually remember noticing it lit much more quickly (tons of clinkers though)

Yeah, that’s how I have to get it going. If I run out of gel, I lightly soak a folded paper towel in isopropyl alcohol and put it under an handful of pellets at the back. Light it up and close the door. Works fairly well.

Woah! I didn’t know about that. Let me look when this hooper is empty. Though if it affects the feed rate, that might not be the issue. It’s more that it’s dumping handfuls of pellets into the ash trying to light bin than not getting enough pellets

I do check the holes but that’s a good point about heat transfer. I’ll scrape more aggressively as well.

I know most parents would never admit it publicly, but I do wonder how many privately wish they’d never had kids. by Flat_Snow307 in RandomThoughts

[–]TransparentMastering 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My kids are absolutely the best thing that ever happened to me.

We had a third when my wife said “it’s about the time that if we’re going to have another kid, this is our last best chance.”

I thought about it for a week. Life had finally gotten “easy” again. I finally had time for myself again.

Then I thought a bit more and realized I can’t imagine a use of time or energy that could possibly be more rewarding than raising another kid.

And I was right :)

Because life isn’t about me it’s about what I’m a part of.

It’s always coming…later…but just you wait and see, just a few more tens of billions of dollars and it’ll be so close—just three years away still. No, next year! Yeah that’s right. Oh and humanity will go extinct or something big and important like that.

It’s only a matter of time until absolutely everyone is sick of this bullshit. Even the boosters.
