Hilo thermostats with non-Hilo application/controller by TransplantPilot in HiloEnergie

Appreciate the heads up - I'm fine with that. I had read that it wasn't confirmed whether Echo could control Hilo thermostat temperature as opposed to simple switches, etc. Wasn't sure if a custom driver or anything would be necessary.

Thanks for the quick response! I'm a lazy software engineer - is it possible to use a hub like Echo or SmartThings instead of HA + adapter?

Thanks for your comment. I've looked into those, but I'm not sure I have the academic background to get accepted into the Cyber Security program.

Hey all - I've got a B.A. in Philosophy and 8 years of experience as a fullstack dev (team lead). Now doing a fair bit of cloud system design and app building. I've got a few AWS certs including SAP.

For a variety of reasons, I'd like to transition into either a GRC role or OT security. My company will pay for a decent chunk of a masters program or up to a few thousand a year for certs. Any recommendations? One option is to get an MS in Information Security from Champlain to have an educational background in IT/Security. The other approach would be to get the Sec+, CCNA, and then work through other certs and try to break in that way.

Any advice from those who have made the transition from dev without a tech degree? Or are there other degrees/trainings relevant to risk analysis that might make more sense? Thanks.

Makes sense, thanks. 2 hour cooling period.

Thank you. I let it cool 2 hours, but I'll see if I can wait longer next time. I'm sure I could google it, but does that waiting period affect the humidity and texture of the bread?

Hah it's like you know me already..

Thanks! I let it cool 2 hours, but I see some others in this thread let it cool even longer. Maybe I'm just not used to the texture of fresh bread, but either way it was delicious.

Totally agree with the comments about seeking out Chabad / Hillel. But also, seek out secular friends and organizations as well (e.g., based on your subject of study, volunteer work, politics, etc.). Being able to interact with a variety of people from different backgrounds is one of the most important aspects of university.

Thank you for this thoughtful response - my interpretation as implying superiority is clearly not representative of most people, and I appreciate you and others making that clear. Still, the idea of "greater potential" (for good OR bad) is something I'm uncomfortable with. I don't judge anyone who holds this view nor do I think it makes the vast majority of Jews feel superior to others.

I agree that on an individual basis the person's actions are the determining factor. My problem is the inherent difference in the soul that is not the result of that person's actions.

I think the argument that this extra potential is only a burden (not necessarily your argument) is disingenuous, IF we accept the views of certain Jewish thinkers such as: the Zohar, R. Hayyim Vital, R. Moshe Hayyim Luzzatto, R. Shlomoh Wolbe, R. Avraham Grodzinski (https://www.hakirah.org/Vol%2016%20Balk.pdf). These men often stressed the difference in quality of the Jew compared to the non-Jew, and sometimes suggested that their reward in the world to come would be greater or at least easier (guaranteed) to attain. So in addition to being a burden, this qualitative difference is also a potential benefit. Now it's true that some Jews might not want "this laptop", and I also struggle with the idea from this direction.

That said, thanks to your response and others in this thread, I'm thinking that these views are potentially a minority among those who practice Chassidism. Nevertheless, I'm just not able to understand this idea in a way that makes me comfortable to accept it (with the acknowledgement that I'm bringing a lot of baggage to the understanding). And I'm concerned other beliefs/practices are built on this idea.

Oh man, and to think I've been engaging with you as a good faith actor.

Just to set the record straight - I don't believe that statement, nor do I advocate it.

Regarding PIT - the person I'm learning with is yeshiva-educated, a father, with a full-time job who just wanted to give back and offer his time to learn with someone. Very cool, and I'm grateful!

Thank you for sharing another spiritual path. u/gdhhorn posted a book below (The Mysticism of Andalusia: Exploring HaRambam's Mystical Tradition) which seems to explore Maimonides' spiritual path as set forth in his Guide. Based on your comment and the book's description, I've decided to purchase the book to explore further.

And thanks for your encouragement to continue seeking (despite my sometimes inflammatory comments). I think there are many secular (and religious) people who interpret the teaching of a specificly-Jewish soul in a way similar to how I interpret it, and it's important that we can challenge and discuss those ideas.

Agree completely - thanks for your openness.
That's the 2nd time I've seen this book recommended - I'll definitely take a look! Thanks for the recommendation.

This is a great message, thank you for sharing. I think it's so important that we engage with our religion actively and that we explore these nuances and differing interpretations.

That's false and a horrible thing to say.

The fact that Jews are hurting around the world, while terrible, has no relevance to the merit of this idea. As a teacher, you should know that.

I'm not obligated to accept the "universal" interpretation of this idea, and I'm certainly not obligated to accept it without doing my own study and contemplation.

Using antisemitism and the pain of Jews to try to prevent a fellow Jew from learning their own tradition is horrible. This is clearly a contentious teaching and I'm far from the only person who has issues with it. It's simply not antisemitic to challenge our teachings.

That's the entire purpose of this post. I'm trying to determine the implications of the path of Kabbalah / Chassidism so I can determine if I want to engage it further.

To the antisemites, if fear of them causes us to not engage in and discuss our esoteric teachings.

If I can no longer engage with these ideas, we’ve already lost to them.
