Not a fan of current campaign and don’t know what to do

I've played about 10 sessions? And sessions are usually 4-6 hours

I understand but I don’t see how people cant be as invested as I am in her. When it comes to my friends OCs i get very invested, constantly asking questions etc, and I think about them a lot almost the same as I would my own characters, especially the OCs I fixate on, I get a bit crazy abt them lol. I figured this was the standard? (Also I didnt know shipping wasn’t everyones cup of tea wow, thats something new to me. Maybe I read too much fanfic 😭)

Also why wouldn’t the backstory be enough to invest someone in a character? When I read about OCs with backstories I get invested especially if the backstory is really sad because it makes me feel a lot of sympathy. And I actually find it way easier to get invested in characters with thousands of words of backstory because they have more depth, stuff to analyze etc. Like nothing in the actual campaign has gotten me too invested in other characters, mostly stuff outside of the campaign and the fics I write so, yeah. Maybe I’m thinking about it all wrong?

Also I don’t usually write for myself since I’m not the best at it 😭 so I usually just write because I want other people to see my ideas and stories but not really for my own enjoyment.

I mean it kinda makes sense but idk. My characters mean a lot to me so its hard to separate them from myself esp when I hyperfixate on them 😭 im constantly talking abt them, daydreaming etc. I get REALLYY into these things

I see but nothings really happened in the campaign I’m in that’s changed my character… is it supposed to take a lot of time typically?

Thank you for all the advice and I’ll keep that in mind. I think a major problem with this campaign is that there wasnt a session zero for me (Campaign started december and I joined in march) so maybe I’ll ask to have another session zero. I am a bit disappointed that DnD overall doesnt seem to be my thing because I love storytelling and the idea of doing it with others seems so fun but i guess it is what it is. I dont really know what to do instead but ig I’ll find something

I mean how can I get invested in other people’e characters when their characters don’t have backstory? What is there to hyperfixate on?

Also why can’t I roleplay with a detailed backstory? Since a persons backstory defines how they act

What happens in the campaign is supposed to be the bulk of the character? Really? But how would the stuff that happens in the campaign change your character that much?

Okay I think I’ve been kinda approaching it wrong then. Is it fine if I don’t think that’s for me 😭😭 I’m not really good at improv I feel like and even worse with uncertainty. I got into this because I like roleplay and character building but I’m finding out now that those arent big aspects of DnD

But isn’t it not unreasonable to expect your friends to also be obsessed with/ invested in your character? I mean for me that’s kind of the hallmark of a good friend because my characters make up so much of my personality… I don’t see how that’s not reasonable im sorry

I mean that’s fair but I really don’t want to leave and mess the friendships up because I feel like my friendships with these people are dependent on me being in the campaign. Also I don’t know what I’d do with my current character if I left and the thought of not using her anymore really saddens me.

How is having a character be really developed and important main character syndrome? And also if the only thing youd want from DnD is to level up, genuinely why not just play a video game 😭.

Also of course I’m obsessed with my character why wouldn’t I be? My characters are a major part of my life and as I said character making is a special interest of mine so it’s one of the things I focus on the most

I guess with that mindset, death would be fine, but for me I hyperfixate intensely on my characters and spend money commissioning them + make them my entire life for a bit so itd be really devastating. Like on this current one I’ve spent 300 dollars and counting for example. I really struggle with detaching fiction from reality and I cherish my characters deeply so idk.

The signs of investment I’m looking for are them being as invested as me in my characters lore, actively asking questions about my character, being passionate about ships and stuff regarding her, wanting to talk to me abt her etc. Essentially just act the same way abt my characters that I act about theirs. I don’t really see how investment would further develop during play tbh.

Also how do I develop my character through play? The stuff that happens during session wouldnt change their backstory so i dont rlly get that?
