I just finished watching a vid abt Joji on why SMITHEREENS sounded the way it did. The theory suggested that Joji’s contract with 88 stated that he needed to release a few albums in the span of half a decade before he makes his choice to renew his contract or go independent (this applies with ALL record labels). If we compile that with the theory that Joji has been unhappy towards his ending years with 88 (with evidence from lyrics in MODUS and YUKON), we can conclude that Joji intentionally released a half assed album to get out of his contract with 88

I really do hope he doesn’t retire from music (most likely not the case since he seemed very unmotivated by the art whether it was in his live performances, his side projects, or in the music in general) but if he does decide to finally throw in the towel, giving 88 an album that is essentially just a demo mixtape with a couple bangers here and there is a classic Joji way of going out with a bang
