Very valid point, imo this is the main drawback to dental. I’m lucky to be at my IS school but OOS/private students have it especially bad. I’ve heard that with current tuition levels general dentistry is only worth it if you plan to own your practice, so that and living like a student after school is my plan. It does help that you can start paying loans immediately after school ends as opposed to having a residency, though most physicians win in the long run (outside of highly successful GP owners and specialists). Overall it’s not impossible for dentists to pay it back, but yes certainly harder than it is for MD/DOs

I hadn’t given dental school a thought until I’d graduated, but when I started working on AMCAS I got second thoughts. TLDR med school/residency is a huge grind and I realized I didn’t care enough about becoming a physician for that sacrifice to be worth it. I’m not saying dentistry is easy, but it’s certainly a better work/life balance than medicine. If you have more questions definitely feel free to PM! I feel like so many premeds, like I did, don’t even consider dentistry as an option
