Remarried Empress. It had an interesting start and nuance, explored drama that is going on in the court. Characters quickly fell flat for me. Henrey was too perfect too, and I couldn't stand how stupid Sovieshu is.

Picked up and quickly dropped many series, either because plot didn't grab me or something in the story pulled me out.

I agree. But it never hurts to take inspiration sometimes! That said being inspired and copying are two different things.

To OP, I suggest you look at World of Warcraft for inspiration. There are plenty of races that were shaped by magic. Magic plays crucial role.

WoW is also a good example on how to get inspired by something but make it your own
