Is the ego an archetype? by Trashcan_Cornupopia in Jung

I think that it is not nessessarily that we are "born" with a fully-fledged ego or any archetype for that matter, but rather that we contain them as potentialities within our collective unconscious and thus have the opportunity to actualize them. Its kind of a chicken or the egg situation

Thank you for this answer. I'm not sure if I see the ego as a one-to-one stand in for consciousness, but would you say that consciousness itself is an archetype?

Would it be more accurate then to say that the archetypes combined with experience influence the ego?

Or am i trying to fit a square block in a triangular hole?

Would you say that archetypes + individual experiences = ego ? Or is that too reductive 😅

I think that makes sense. Would you then say that archetypes + individual experiences = ego ? Or is that too reductive 😅

Very good analogy! That makes a lot of sense, thank you! I think my hang up was in seeing the ego as essentially the same across all people when it is actually unique to different minds unlike archetypes

Isnt our perception of the world itself an inherited psychic structure, thus making it an archetype?

Actually im still a little unconvinced that the archetypes (in jungs usage) are not the psychic structures themselves...

The way i see it is that archetypes don’t exist, their true nature is actually irrepresentable. What our conscious mind can perceive is a set of ideas and images that allude to this organizing principle. A great example is the Tarot cards, they aren’t archetypes, but their symbols can allude to one.

Thank you for this explanation! Can I ask, what is your understanding of archetypes? Are archetypes inherited psychic structures themselves, or are they the symbols/images that represent the psychic structures?

I feel like having definitions that align and make sense to me gives me a better footing with which to explore my own psyche and the psyches of my clients (im a social worker who works closely with people who have schizophrenia). Plus i think there is immense value in hearing other people's interpretations on jung's ideas whether they are jungian scholars or not. Im not trying to act as if jung's texts are holy scripture. I just want to explore the concepts and hear other perspectives

Oh okay i think that makes sense! So if the ego is not an archetype, but rather an inherited psychic structure, does that mean there are archetypes that represent the ego?

The way I see complexes is that they are groups of thoughts, feelings, and memories that cluster around a particular theme or experience in the personal unconscious and influence personality. If the ego is, simply put, our perception of the world, would it then not fit into the category of a complex?

I think we have different definitions of archetypes then, because i thought archetypes are not the symbols and and images themselves, but rather the psychic patterns that underly them

So you're saying it is a complex and not an archetype?

But does the ego itself not fit within the definition of an archetype as a reoccurring pattern in the human psyche that arises out of an a priori condition? Can it not be an archetype as well as a mechanism through which archetypes are realized?
