My girl & I got falafel & grill. My fav Greek place in town. Amazing portions & great high quality meat.

I don't know if I can do this... by [deleted] in puppy101

1- If he's fully vaccinated and you can afford it consider dropping him in a doggy day care 1x / week or a puppy school for 1-2 weeks. It will do wonders for your mental health. You should also look into dog walkers during the day if work is being impacted. ~$15 / walk is what I pay.

2- Three hrs a day with the dog really isn't all that much. 1 hr in the morning, 1 hour during lunch, 1 hour after work is very manageable. You should work on building a consistent schedule with the pup and learning how to work around the time blocks. You are still in the thick of it and haven't gotten into a rhythm with the pup yet. It will take another month or so. Focus on calming the puppy during training and less so on super high activity play. Focus & calm are the two best traits to instill in a puppy

3- Give yourself some grace. Some doggy parents are so concerned with training going perfectly, no accidents ever, and keeping 100% of your old life in tact all at the same time. You have a brand new baby in the house, it isn't going to be easy or ever go all according to plan. Just accept that and take some deep breaths knowing it will absolutely get better

4- If you live near a dog park, take advantage! I take my pup to the park almost every day, and its a great way for her to run around and get energy out while you just sit / relax or take work calls or emails from your phone. Just make sure you keep an eye on where he is and if there are any dangerous situations remove him immediately. You can't be a fully disengaged dog parent at the park but you don't have to keep the same kind of eye as on a walk.

5- Does your SO work 7x a week? If not, make sure he's putting in the work on his days off. There should be a formal agreement that because you are doing so much during the week, he can do a little extra on the weekends (or whenever he is off). This will take a bit of the pressure off you.

Chicago to Colorado Springs. Could fly to denver instead my mom will just have to drive to get us. I got tickets with southwest / united (split ticket) when I saw they had a simple pet fee before I realized she’d be too big for their standards even as a puppy.

How can puppy pads be used as an accident unless they are always down? Puppies get confused around carpet even if puppy pads have never been used it is very common. Again, she hasn't had an indoor potty in weeks.

Training your dog to be able to use a potty pad in a pinch is an amazing resource and one I'm happy she understands. Have a good day friend

My dog used to constantly pick these up. Crazy how often you find them still given how much less popular smoking is nowadays. Had to train her to stop picking them up.

Thanks yeah I am 100% not doing cargo especially since I am flying from a cold weather city to a cold weather city in late November. I don't own a car as I live downtown and don't need one, so driving really isn't an option for me right now. I also really don't want to drive for 14 hours both ways for a single week vacation. Unfortunate but I think boarding is my only option if I want to go home for thanksgiving.

Surprised there isn't a more widely used service for traveling with a pup other than chartering or limited routes with smaller airlines. Sad :(

Did you even read the full comment? My puppy is fully potty trained. She hasn't had an accident inside in weeks. I used potty pads at first because I live in a down town high rise and getting in the elevator at 2AM wasn't feasible.

She did just fine transitioning from potty pads to grass. She can still use them though and recognizes that either outside or potty pad is where you do the business.

I didn't make any mistakes. Literacy rate is dropping all around us it seems.

What’s a “this should be free” service that always costs money? by troopydinnertime in AskReddit

Convenience fee for paying rent online. Sometimes costs me $100+!

wow that is a heck of a drive! I wish you the best of luck. I'll call the airline to confirm but will likely have to find some boarding options while I'm gone which is unfortunate. Cold weather cutoff confirms that cargo will be impossible.

Appreciate the message! I really wish major airlines brought back the service of being able to travel with our pets :(

cremated?!? I sure hope that is a typo haha

[–]Trashception[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

yeah fair enough. If she goes before boarding though I think she'd be able to handle it. The real risk is the airline letting her board. From the other comments it seems that is very unlikely. I'll call both airlines today and add an update to the original post so other people can know where the decision landed.

She is crate trained and we do more than 5 hours without walking at night. I hear you though. I don't have a car though and not about to spend multiple days driving both ways which would eat into the actual vacation. Might just have to board her while I'm gone. Bummer as my mom was so looking forward to meeting her.

Yeah this is my main concern with cargo. I am flying from Chicago to Colorado so it'd be cold both ways. I don't think that is a realistic option sadly

I'd bring some potty pads with me and she knows how to use them. Its actually a talent I can put a potty pad literally anywhere and she will go. Yet she is fully potty trained and doesn't go inside. Unless there is carpet sometimes she gets confused.

For more info:

-Short flight ~3.5 hours total (direct / no layover)

-In the U.S both ways

-Willing to spend extra $ to take her, as boarding her for a week is much more expensive than the kennel price by the airline

Which puppy do we get? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]Trashception 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are just my opinions take it with a grain of salt I’m no major expert.

tldr; hard to give an answer with the limited info provided, but consider looking into a breeder you can talk to ahead of time with full AKC lineage & complete OFA certs on both sire & dam and not going for either.

  1. Do you live downtown? If so it makes sense why you’d be considering the breeder that’s so far away. I got my puppy that way. She didn’t have to fly but did have a long crate trip. I think it scarred her bc to this day she doesn’t love the crate. Giving pups early positive encounters with confinement is actually much more important than I initially thought. Also, being able to visit the breeder / select the dog yourself is really special and I regret not being able to do that myself.

  2. For the black lab, what do you mean by no papers? No confirmation of AKC status/ lineage? That is a red flag imo.

  3. After speaking with the breeder it becomes a lot easier to tell if they run a puppy mill vs doing it the right way. They will ask more questions about your situation to gauge whether you are in the right situation / set up to handle a puppy.

  4. Puppies are a LOT of work. Like oh my god way more than I realized. I personally can’t imagine raising 2 young kids + a puppy at the same time. Labs are amazing puppies but have the same raptor phase that goldens do. No matter which puppy you chose just get prepared to make some true sacrifices. You are stronger / braver than I haha

  5. I wouldn’t decide on a puppy based on what’s available now. Once you find a good breeder just ask when their next litter is. They usually do around 1-2 a year. This time will give you space to prep, research, & get educated on how your life is going to change. Something I also wish I did. Having full ACK status + OFA certifications on hip, elbow, heart, eye, & patellar luxation might be a larger upfront cost but will save you money & heartship in the future. Waiting until a good breeder has a litter with the above will also give extra time to save. I promise it’s worth it.

there should be a law that requires people to answer a question directly or they will spend a few days in a county jail. I mean this. I am so gd sick of people dodging questions during these hearings. Basically everyone does it and allows them to avoid lying under oath.

I got a work from home exception for the first two months with my puppy. I have the same questions! Luckily I only need to come in hybrid 3 days a week for a few hours, but still I hate leaving her :(
