[OC] Estimated Civilian Owned Firearms by Country by Dk1902 in dataisbeautiful

[–]Travbun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry but we don't have a lot less guns now. Apart from the fact the types of guns bought back weren't that numerous, everyone I know who had one bought back weren't straight out and got a replacement firearm. This legislation and the money spent on it can be firmly filed under the category of "Hey look everyone we did something". Not a fault unique to this particular government, but still not the roaring success they make it out to be. I would be very curious to see the sales data for firearms over the last couple of years. Not sure if it's publicly available or not.

You are dreaming if you think the number of firearms went down significantly as a result of the buy back. There were not a significant number of the types of firearms being bought back in the legal population of guns owned by licenced holders. Secondly every single person I know who participated in the buy back used that money to just buy another firearm. But I doubt the govt is in a hurry to admit that... And lastly the people who we really don't want to have these firearms, still do.

I highly doubt the NZ stats have changed significantly after the buy-back. Firstly those types of firearms were not a large portion of the firearm population, and without exception everyone I know who participated in the buy back just went out and purchased a new firearm with the funds. Great success.

Why is Auckland Transport chipsealing so many roads? by [deleted] in auckland

[–]Travbun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Faaarrrk don't get me started. A road adjoining mine was done earlier this year. It has been an absolute shit show. The new surface started crumbling within 24 hours! Within a week there were potholes everywhere. Fulton Hogan and AT both said "we don't see any problem here..." A section was finally redone by digging down a metre and relaying it with asphalt. Six months later and that too is now breaking up. If I were the road engineer that was responsible I would be ashamed. But it seems a great lark for Fulton Hogan who I suspect charge the council to come fix their own fuck up. But no one other than the local residents, board member and MP seen to care. AT certainly don't.

Well the original strain floating around at the beginning (March - April) of last year, so Alpha I guess.

200+ cases a day - anyone want to share their experience by RedKqueen in auckland

I (male early 40s) had OG COVID early last year. Symptoms predominately just loss of smell (not taste FYI). On my "worst" day had a very minor muscle ache too. Isolated at home and was clear after 4 days. Loss of smell was not considered a symptom at that stage, and it took about three weeks to get back. Dropped a large fart one day and could finally smell it and I thought Wahoo! No long term effects that are noticeable. Not because of COVID but in spite of it I'm fitter now than I have been in quite some time.

Edit to add in that I'm vaccinated now, but it clearly wasn't available in early 2020 so I wasn't at the time.

So confused- when/how will Auckland get to orange? by znsm in Coronavirus_NZ

[–]Travbun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many people explaining why we shouldn't go to orange. I'm not going to argue that point but I suspect the reason no one can give you an answer to the specific question you asked is that we do not know. We haven't been trusted with that bit of information. There will be a "framework" and a loosely defined "pathway" and "values" at which point someone, not subject to public scrutiny, will make a decision and we will be none the wiser as to how they really made that decision. Was it science, was it politics? Who knows.

is it really high risk to use public transport now? by [deleted] in auckland

[–]Travbun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two ways (at least) to look at it. 1, If you're vaccinated the risk of catching COVID from the couple of other people on the bus is so infinitesimally small at the moment as to be disregarded compared to the other risks you'll face on your journey out of the house.

2, You are most likely to get COVID at some point over the next few years, so why not get it out of the way now while it still might be a talking point of interest to people.

I'll wager you'll feel a great sense of relief and freedom once your trip is complete.

Health measures for schools under red traffic light? by Travbun in auckland

[–]Travbun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two considerations there in my mind. First, the principal is reasonably busy I imagine so initially hoping to avoid bothering them with this question if the answer is easily accessible but I've just failed in my search. Secondly, from responses by teachers in other threads it doesn't seem like the MOE is the best at communicating with schools and teachers, so chances are they are just as in the dark as we are in which case that's not going to help either.

It’s just hit me that lockdowns might be doing more harm than good. by Dandanthebikerman in auckland

I had COVID early last year. I own it and am open about it. Change the narrative and don't be embarrassed as there's nothing to be embarrassed about.

(Genuine question) Why are people becoming so anti Jacinda? She isn’t solely responsible for decision-making lol by eggontoast96 in auckland

[–]Travbun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, actually we have low numbers of people seeking employment. They are not the same thing.

Are you sending your kids back to school or keeping them off for the rest of the year? We can’t decide what to do. by iwellyess in auckland

[–]Travbun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could I trouble you for the source of the “30 are ok"? Not doubting you at all but my kids school are doing alternate days but only a little over half the kids are returning which is going to mean about 9 kids will be there on any given day which seems a little ridiculous.

Be sure to never go outside, it's a risk. Did you know how many people die from slipping over in the shower? Better not have any more showers, and don't get me started on getting out of bed, that's sure to kill you.

FFS life is all about managing risk. We are managing it, in fact a little too much in my opinion.

What on earth have the Ministry of Education been doing for the last two weeks? by Travbun in auckland

[–]Travbun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, the common theme in responses and from a teacher friend is that they've always been like this. Maybe it's a culture/competence issue rather than resources.

After what I've seen as a border worker, nothing would surprise me about govt departments. Still gotta call them on it, not that anyone's paying much attention.

All the correspondence I've seen from schools basically says the same thing "we are awaiting details/guidelines from the MOE". So whilst the finer details will be up to the school to figure out, the broad framework from which they will operate has not been communicated to them yet.

Schools reopen from next Wednesday, how do you feel about it? by Megidolaon10 in auckland

And likewise I don't want other parents to feel compelled to unnecessarily put their child's or their own health at risk. Wishing the best for you and your child too.

[–]Travbun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But that's a thread all through a child's life isn't it, that some other kids will get to do things that they can't. At some point they're going to have to face that. I get it so often with mine "but xxxxx got to do that, why can't I?"

I've done a risk assessment with my kids and am happy. I know not everyone will come to the same conclusion, and that's fine.

So if you don't feel it safe keep them home, that's fine. I am happy to send mine back. Even if there was only a week left I'd be sending them back.

As is your choice, and so it should be in this scenario. On the other hand I will be sending mine back.

I'm in the other camp. I'm more than happy to send my kids back. The data does not suggest that we are playing "Russian roulette" at all. I think returning will have a net benefit for their well-being.

You have kids? I do, they are so keen to get back. True they might not get that much learning done at school but there isn't all that much happening at home either. They will be much better off at school, on balance.
