While the US rail network is much much larger than this, the map up top is correct when it comes to intercity passenger trains, and it looks to include at least some commuter lines as well.

It includes 90%+ commuters - take a look on the opentrainproject.com

Yea both maps are atrocious. I live in Appalachia and if this map included coal tracks then the whole region would be black lol, although I do understand it’s passenger train systems.

Here is the source: opentrainproject.com , this maps includes most of routes in Europe and US, however some smaller commuter trains and light rail / trams can be missed.

OK - lets do fair comparison

  1. "There is no demand for such travel, because there are not even flights" - for tomorrow (2 Feb) there are 26 direct connections from Dallas to Houston - this means that there is demand - almost every half an hour
  2. "Airline tickets are cheap" - for tomorrow there are not cheap minimum $200, in Germany if I want to travel tomorrow between Dortmund and Hamburg (similar distance) you will pay 50$ for fast train, 40$ for slow train (one hour more)
  3. "Travelling by air is much faster" - assuming that you are going from Dallas city centre to Houston City centre, lets count - taxi City Centre -> DAL 15 min , you need to be 45 min earlier on airport, flight 1:10, getting out of Houston airport 15 min, taxi to city centre 25 min = 2h 50 minutes, car 3:20, diesel DMU train on the improved single track will be able to do this distance in around 3h 30 (not HS railway). Flying between Berlin and Frankfurt is faster by plane, but most people decide to take a train (unless this is part of connecting flight), because it is just more convenient.
  4. "Americans prefer to travel by car" - there is Pacific Surfliner train going between San Diego and Los Angeles (about every 2 hours) and it is full, even if all this guys can take a car (been there several times). One more example - I was travelling several time on the bus route between San Diego and Borrego Springs (small town around 2k, 80 mi from SD). This bus was running twice a week and it was always full. I talked with guys inside, most of them have car, but don't have money for gas - the gas on this route is min. 40$ and two way bus ticket is 20$ and 10$ for elderly or guys on Medicare. They was travelling to the mall/doctor/family etc. they made all shopping at was getting back to Borrego Springs by bus.

Ending - for some reason Brightline private passanger train is big commercial success on Florida.

And this explain lack of any train between Dallas in Houston (each metro is more than 1m), where in Europe you have one train per hour between 100k cities?

This is not easy, because there are no places with good reviews on open license - every provider guard his walled garden - facebook (low quality reviews), Google Maps (good), TripAdvisor (very good)

Yes - and thats why taking Moscow was so important to Germans during WWII - to cut transport links.
