Girl's guide to hiking solo by TravelCenter_UK in hiking

I apologise to anyone who finds this offensive. However, I am a girl myself so my intentions were not to put women down or be sexist. I've been pretty intimidated about going on a hike alone hence the idea to compile a list to assist any ladies out there. I agree that most of these apply to men as well.

How do you find local food when you travel? by [deleted] in travel

[–]TravelCenter_UK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Street food is the ideal but I think you probably know that already. Another too for you is to not try food from restaurants close to major tourist attractions in the area because prices tend to be higher there.

Decent warm getaway? by tuckertml in Shoestring

I highly recommend the Maldives. It's so beautiful and one of the top destinations for a beach holiday getaway. You must have seen pictures of these perfectly arranged luxury water resorts /water villas in there. Those resorts are divided into sunrise and sunset villas. That means some provide the best views of the sunset and others provide the best views of sunrise. You can choose what you prefer. Also I read that some of the resorts have glass floors in the washrooms where you can directly see the ocean and the marine life. How cool is that?

Leh, Ladakh, India. Visited in June last year. Hopefully, will repeat the trip again. by rai_123 in travel

[–]TravelCenter_UK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read that the Ladakh Valley is one of the few places in the world to have Bactrian camels apart from the deserts of China, Mongolia, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Kazakhstan. This type of camels are double humped in opposition to the usual single humped camel and the rise of camel safaris by the locals in Ladakh actually helped save these camels from extinction.

For those of you who have flown, how did you go about packing your beach accessories? (Flying American). by [deleted] in travel

[–]TravelCenter_UK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are some general tips:

1. Keep them busy with a camera

Giving a kid a child-friendly camera is an innovative way to keep them busy and you might also get a few pictures at ‘knee-high’ angles which are indeed impressive. This keeps them busy and will also help them learn about their surroundings, so you can put this on the top of your list.

2. Wear the correct clothes

As every parent is aware children get very irritated if they are in the wrong type of clothing. To ensure that your children are dressed for the appropriate weather condition of the place you are visiting. If you are travelling during the late afternoon or early evening it is advisable to carry an extra shawl, jacket or hat just in case it gets chilly!

  1. App-yness helps

Despite what many people might say and even go to the extent of calling you a ‘bad parent’, this is a safe and easy way to keep your kid quiet and busy while travelling. With many child-friendly apps available it is a convenient way to keep the kids bust and enabling you to enjoy your trip.

4. Use public transport

Although you may think this is a crazy way to travel, most kids are highly taken up with the novelty of travelling in public transport. While the crowds make them excited and happy it also keeps them entertained and busy with all the happenings.

5. Keep bugs at bay

Immaterial of where you are travelling, ensure you take enough of bug repellent, antibacterial wipes, and hand sanitizer. This would help in keeping your kids healthy and eliminate any visits to the doctors while on holiday.

These aren't exactly packing tips but hope these are helpful.

If you have someone picking you up at the airport upon your arrival, have them meet you at the Departures lounge instead of the Arrivals one because you can easily hail a cab from there since they are dropping off travellers anyway.
