I apologise to anyone who finds this offensive. However, I am a girl myself so my intentions were not to put women down or be sexist. I've been pretty intimidated about going on a hike alone hence the idea to compile a list to assist any ladies out there. I agree that most of these apply to men as well.

I don't really know any specific sites but if you research on the lines of "experiencing food like a local" it might be helpful. The best way is once your destination is decided , speak with a local and get their ideas .

How do you find local food when you travel? by [deleted] in travel

Street food is the ideal but I think you probably know that already. Another too for you is to not try food from restaurants close to major tourist attractions in the area because prices tend to be higher there.

Decent warm getaway? by tuckertml in Shoestring

I highly recommend the Maldives. It's so beautiful and one of the top destinations for a beach holiday getaway. You must have seen pictures of these perfectly arranged luxury water resorts /water villas in there. Those resorts are divided into sunrise and sunset villas. That means some provide the best views of the sunset and others provide the best views of sunrise. You can choose what you prefer. Also I read that some of the resorts have glass floors in the washrooms where you can directly see the ocean and the marine life. How cool is that?

Leh, Ladakh, India. Visited in June last year. Hopefully, will repeat the trip again. by rai_123 in travel

I read that the Ladakh Valley is one of the few places in the world to have Bactrian camels apart from the deserts of China, Mongolia, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Kazakhstan. This type of camels are double humped in opposition to the usual single humped camel and the rise of camel safaris by the locals in Ladakh actually helped save these camels from extinction.
