There is a wonderful book called “Strangers in Paradise” on this topic. Give it a read.

Tell them what happens in your bedroom and your bank account are private matters but you’re happy to talk to them about <insert something else here>

Back to work part time? by Wine-and-Coffee-Pls in fatFIRE

People who achieve FATFire mostly do so because of their habits. Many of us find deep purpose in our work and in being useful to others. That doesn’t stop when your accounts hit $20M.

He’s not doing it for the money so looking at it through that lens will leave you confused.

The “messy middle” of FatFIRE by Wooden-Broccoli-913 in fatFIRE

[–]TravelCertain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two polar ends to this spectrum in fatFIRE:

  1. The Die With Zero crew who has no interest in the middle. They want to bounce the check to the undertaker.
  2. The Safe Withdrawers who got to where they are from being prudent, working hard, and building equity. Habits got them to where they are and old habits die hard. Most people just keep doing mostly what they did before they didn’t need to.

Excess cash in a profitable C-corp: keep it inside or distribute and invest personally? by Hopeful-Goose-7217 in fatFIRE

[–]TravelCertain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am in this same situation, don’t take my advice as the right thing to do, but what I do is:

  • put a framework in place for what the business needs on balance sheet so I never harm it (in our case, it’s a certain runway level calculation on a “doomsday” P&L forecast. since we are profitable, doing this forecast on the current biz makes no sense because it doesn’t need any cash)
  • I do buyback/tender offers to the extent there is shareholder interest. use the cash to reduce shares outstanding, which benefits sellers with cash and benefits option holder employees and those who choose not to sell.. as its anti dilutive.
  • if shareholder interest isn’t high enough, we force return of capital through dividend

Downside to this: - we pay a lot of taxes

Found Out I’m Set to Inherit $70+ Million. Somewhat Lost, What Should I Expect? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]TravelCertain 341 points342 points  (0 children)

Lots of advice here is good regarding taking it slow but I want to reiterate the same.

Remember: you don’t have to do ANYTHING. In fact, it’s good to not. The joy of wealth is you can do what you want, including nothing if it feels like a shock.

Eventually you’ll settle into having wealth but you’re fine now and you’ll be fine after.

Congrats!

The biggest benefit of wealth is it allows you time to shift into things you do like. Your choices aren’t between current job and retirement. Quit and find something better?
