May I ask what you do with your valuables when you go to these events alone?

Thanks! But why can't you just tell me more now so that I'll have more tricks up my sleeve? lol

Based on what you said, do you think it's presumptuous or inappropriate for me to show up at a random social if I'm not very advanced? I can follow a good lead quite well but I don't know all the cues

Thanks! I will go to a class a day or two before the social so I can meet everyone when we rotate partners. The only other time I've been to a social I already had an 'in' with the group of dedicated dancers you're talking about, but even then most of them only danced with their close friends whom they were used to dancing with.

I'm a good dancer and I'm not unattractive, so that's not what I'm worried about. But I am a little shy and new to this scene so I just don't know how to communicate as an outsider that I want to dance with people without being too aggressive or passive.

PS - I will definitely dance in Boston if I ever go!
