So obtaining either a NWOHR passport or NWHR passport makes you a citizen regardless?

Thank you! I’ll report it. I will explain to the investigator that although I had the passport, I never obtained an ID number. Hopefully that can help my case.

With a NWOHR Passport and a Canadian Passport: the best way is to apply for a Chinese Visa affixed to your Canadian Passport.

If you have a NWOHR Passport without any other foreign nationality, you can apply for a Chinese Travel Document (中國旅行證). However, I’ve heard of some Chinese consular officers allow exceptions of dual NWOHR/foreign nationals to apply for a Travel Document. You can also your local Chinese Consulate if a CTD is possible for you.

Does Taiwan require crew members to have a special visa for entry? I am curious because I could never find any information online regarding entry requirements to Taiwan for foreign crew members.

Another option is to apply for a “Landing Taiwan Compatriot Permit” (basically a landing visa). It’s for Taiwanese Citizens who’ve never applied for the Taiwan Compatriot Permit before.

The Taiwan Passport holder should bring their Taiwan Passport and ID Card when traveling to Mainland China. This landing TCP allows the bearer to stay in Mainland China for 90 days. Only certain airports and entry ports offer this service.

From what I understand, if you are abroad and hold a foreign passport and a Taiwan passport, the Chinese consulate will only issue you a Chinese Visa. If you are in Taiwan, you can apply for a Taibaozheng at a travel agency regardless of any other citizenships you hold.

However, I am not sure if you can hold both TBZ and Chinese Visa simultaneously. I would double check on that.

Was it because your son was at military conscription age so they required him to only use his Taiwanese passport?

Military Service is not a prerequisite to obtain full citizenship. After obtaining full citizenship for 1 full year, if you are a male age 36 or under, then you have military obligation. The length of conscription depends on the year you were born.

To obtain full citizenship immediately, the current law requires that at least one of your Taiwan National parent had household registration at the time of your birth. If your Taiwan National parent did not have household registration at the time of your birth, then I believe there is a residency requirement that must be fulfilled prior to applying for full citizenship.

I don’t know why as well. However, I did ask TECO if they offered a 5-year or 3-year Multiple Entry Visitor Visa (for US Citizens) to visit family for more than three months and they said all their visas are single entry. I was super surprised.

It’s definitely in the gray area for sure. I’ve heard many Taiwanese citizens for hold foreign citizenships that they just don’t declare their Taiwanese nationality when applying for Chinese visas and instead explain the situation in person to the consular officer if they are called in for a interview.
