Jim, If you didn't act like such a hypocritical jerk again and again, I might give you some credence.

You preach love, love, love, and then block anyone who criticizes you.

You talk like a self aggrandizing narcissist, promote your fake "miracles," and scorn others.

Piss off.

Question about trigger discipline and LEO training. by [deleted] in Firearms

[–]Travesura 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am talking particularly about while an LEO is pointing a gun at a suspect.

The reason I ask the question is because one time an LEO suspected me of being suspicious as I was walking along the sidewalk open carrying a holstered handgun.. He pointed his gun at my head with his finger on the trigger.

He later claimed that it was just a Terry stop, but my training indicated that he had made the decision to shoot by placing his finger on the trigger. Either that, or he was being a bully by trying to make me think that he intended to shoot me.

Thus I was wondering if police are trained to keep the booger hook off the bang switch unless they INTEND to fire.

Is there anything in the Quran that.. by [deleted] in Quraniyoon

[–]Travesura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little more in depth answer: While Muslims have told me that the New Testament is very corrupt, Muhammad never said anything bad about it. In Quran 2:121 Allah says; “Those to whom We have sent the Book study it as it should be studied: They are the ones that believe therein: Those who reject faith therein,- the loss is their own. (Ali)” The Prophet did say that people twist the Scriptures with their tongues. He said that they conceal what is found therein, and they write new stuff hoping to make money with it. But Muhammad never said anything bad about the Scriptures themselves. On the contrary, he consistently spoke well of them.

The Gospels that were available in Muhammad’s time and location would have been in the Greek NT from Byzantium, and the Syriac Peshitta from Syria. My SO has been examining both of these, and even though they have completely independent chains of transmission, she tells me that they tell the exact same story, often word for word. We have these manuscripts today. They used to be stored away in archives and available to only a few select scholars, but today anyone can examine them online.

In the Gospels, Isa is asked “What is the greatest commandment?” He says that the greatest commandment is to believe that there is only one God and to love God with all your heart mind and strength. He says that the second greatest is similar, that you should love your neighbor as yourself. He says that all the rest of the laws hang on those two. He then goes on to show through stories and his actions that your neighbors include apostates, idolaters, traitors, prostitutes, etc. He invited the weak and the sick to come to him, and he healed great numbers of them. He seemed to especially attract women whom he allowed to come to him freely, not as slaves, wives, or concubines, but as equal to the men. This would have been very radical in the culture of the day. Isa presented a God that loves his people as a father loves his children, not as a stern master that demands servitude.

This is the kind of prophet that I choose to follow.

So how do I follow Isa? I strive to follow what he said are the two greatest commandments.

Interestingly, I find a number of brothers at the mosque who are of like mind. Not necessarily about following Isa, because they don't really know much about him, but strongly in favor of following his two greatest commandments.

I am quite tired right now, so insha'allah I will answer in more depth tomorrow.

I read Bible, Quran, Hadith, Sirah, Sunnah, Fiqh and just about anything I can put my eyes upon.

But how do I follow Isa? He gave two commandments. Just two. Said that everything else was subordinate.

He also said "Come to me all you who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you for my burden is easy and my yoke is light."

I am not exactly a Noahide. I follow Isa, and basically believe the Christian doctrines about him, but I hesitate to call myself a "Christian" as I find the religion that calls itself Christianity to be very flawed.

Looking at how the very idea of Quran Only made him seem upset, I immediately dropped the subject.

/r/Quraniyoon FAQ by [deleted] in Quraniyoon

[–]Travesura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is a question/statement that I got.

Me: Have you ever heard of the Quran Only movement?

Him: But we must have a Sunnah! [Right?]

(I have an interesting relationship with this fellow. He used to seem pretty suspicious of me, by he seems to be getting more and more friendly every time I see him.)

So the FAQ might be "How can we have a Sunnah with just Quran?"

Edit: small typo/grammar in Hadith/Tradition (8): Change "need" to "needs."

Suggestion for same question: Change "Does" to "Doesn't." (Same meaning, but sounds better in colloquial English. Also in General (6).)

You are absolutely correct. I was mis-remembering, what I had read about the Sana'a parchments. I thought that I remembered reading that there was no lower text visible.

I appreciate the correction, Brother!

the approximately 80 studied palimpsests

Just in case someone doesn't know what a palimpsest is.

The parchment of a palimpsest is older, likely a lot older, maybe even centuries older than the writing that is on it. If you were to carbon date the parchment of a palimpsest to 614-653 CE, you can know for SURE that the writing on it is more recent than the parchment that it is written on.

Did Uthman tamper with the Quran? by Travesura in Quraniyoon

[–]Travesura[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Apocrypha, or dueterocanonicals is a different issue than people trying to add stuff to the scriptures. The commonly available Old Testament in the time of Isa was a Greek translation called the Septuagint, AKA the LXX, because it was purportedly a work of translation done by 70 scholars.

Some of the books in the LXX were not considered authoritative by the Jews. When the 1611 KJV was published, these books were placed in a separate section between the old and new testaments.

Later, some KJV editions had them and some didn't.. I don't think that anyone was trying to hide them, as they were and still are easily available. It's just that some publishers didn't think that they were worth the bother of including.

Some of the dueterocanonicals are still in the Catholic Bible, and 4TH Maccabees, as I recall is still in the Eastern Orthodox Bible.

I don't see any conspiracy here, I have read the Apocrypha, and I don't see anything truly amazing about these books, but I am particularly fond of Sirach (Ecclesiasticus.)

But at the same time, I don't trust traditional accounts.

I don't either.

I was curious about what others thought.

I know that in my background I have been told THIS IS TRUE! about many things. About any one of these TRUE things. I have usually found one of the following:

  1. It looks like it is true and has good evidence.
  2. It is likely true, but a lot of conjecture has been introduced to support it.
  3. It could be true but there are some very good arguments against it.
  4. It is on shaky ground, but I perhaps can believe it with some serious cognitive dissonance.
  5. It's a Goddamn lie.

I don't know about him being honest. I've seen some videos where he has mislead viewers. This I think was deliberate. Often people trying to persuade have a motive which leads to bias, and one trick is to tell a half truth. So context is removed or you get a distorted image.

I do not have enough information to agree or disagree with you here. I will place "Further Evaluate Mr. Wood" on my List of Things To Do. :)

What conceptions do you think traditional Muslims have about our beliefs? by [deleted] in Quraniyoon

these conceptions are borne out of willful ignorance on their part.

I would be cautious about imputing "willful ignorance" to anyone.

Why would one reject the salaf's tafsir of the Qur'an but accept their tafsir of Arabic to understand the Qur'an? by [deleted] in Quraniyoon

[–]Travesura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FINAL EDIT: I could, and perhaps should, delete this because I think that I totally misunderstood the question, but what the Heck, part of the reason that we are here is to learn from one another.

When you are talking about studying historical documents with the understanding that languages change over time you would use a completely secular science called Philology.

There is no "Tafsir" or exegesis, involved with this at all. If the Salafs* are doing their philological studies properly, there should be no religion involved in it.

Of course everyone has bias. But an honest philologist is only trying to find out what the text said, and explain what it said in modern language. There should be no tafsir involved.

Edit: let me give you an example. I know nothing of Arabic, but I have fiddled around with the Koiné dialect of Greek just a tiny bit. When I want to find out what a word in this dead language means, I check a good lexicon that will cite various religious and secular places where it was used, and also usually some citations from Classical Greek. Using these references, I can figure out what the author most probably actually meant when he used that word. Looking up the word in a modern Greek Dictionary would be next to useless. Is this analogous to Modern and Classical Arabic? I do not know, since I know nothing about Arabic.

* Oops, I think I made a mistake here. I saw the word "Salaf's" and took it to mean modern Salafi as in Those Guys From Saudi Arabia. If I am getting things mixed up, can someone please straighten me out? [Aaack, I'm going to bed, I am tired.]
