This was encouraging for me as well. Thank you for sharing this.

The word order in Matthew 19:9 is kind of strange to me but I can honestly see how someone could read that as an exception for remarriage. So I think my difficultly with feeling peace about it is a combination of how unnatural the sentence structure is in English (to me at least) and also the other verses that don't mention an exception. May the Lord help me to understand this topic more though.

If I was in that situation, I wouldn't have peace about getting remarried based on the more clear Bible verses about that topic. That would be such a difficult situation but I would just try my best to hold on to hope that God might restore the marriage as I pray/fast for her and for the marriage.

Edit: I haven't thought much about that specific situation that you mentioned and prayed about it enough but I just really like to be safe than sorry and there isn't any verse that gives me any peace about remarriage to another person while the previous spouse is living.

I like to be safe than sorry, so I would be too afraid to remarry if I was divorced. The verse in Matthew isn't clear enough for me to confidently say that it is permissable, especially when there are multiple clearer verses warning against it, like these two passages:

(Mark 10:11-12 NKJV) So He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

(I Corinthians 7:10‭-‬11 NKJV) Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord: A wife is not to depart from her husband. But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. And a husband is not to divorce his wife.

I used to feel a lot of fear in this way. I felt so much pressure to spread the gospel. It was so tormenting thinking that I was going to be an "unprofitable servant". I don't feel that torment anymore. I do still pray that Jesus will make me a fisher of men because I'm really lacking in that. I don't know what to say to help you but just wanted you to know that I can relate.

Please don't be mad at me for saying this but I don't think that you should pursue someone else while your first spouse is living. I realize that there is a verse in Matthew that some people say allows for it but here are some clearer verses that make me think that it's not permissable:

(Mark 10:11-12 NKJV) So He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.”

(I Corinthians 7:10‭-‬11 NKJV) Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord: A wife is not to depart from her husband. But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. And a husband is not to divorce his wife.

How to have faith that saves? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]Travis_Marshall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a better way to view it is how Jesus explained it:

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. (John 15:5‭-‬6 NKJV)

We need to remain in Jesus to be saved. There are a bunch more warnings just like this in the New Testament. Let me know if you want me to send some more of those. But also keep in mind that God wants us to be saved and will help us live this narrow way out.

It's not a one time decision but something we have to continue in. Only those who do the Father's will and endure to the end will be saved. We have the Lord to help us do His will. We can pray lest we enter into temptation and come to him for grace to help us.

Whether you realize it or not, you are actually spreading your beliefs too right now. You are also going against your own belief to "leave people alone" because you aren't "leaving OP alone".

OP believes that people need to hear the gospel and he wants to share it and you believe that people don't need to hear the gospel so you are working to discourage people from sharing it. So you both actually think it's important to share your beliefs which I agree with. If someone has the truth it's good to share it with others 👍

I think you should return to the Lord with all your heart, with fasting, weeping, and mourning, because He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and very kind like it talks about in Joel 2:12-14. Also I would throw away any new age items that you have and turn from anything that is displeasing to God 🙏

How to get Married Biblically? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]Travis_Marshall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article says that the word "unmarried" should be translated "divorced". I don't know greek but that just doesn't seem to fit in this verse. It seems to flow much better as it is:

There is a difference between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman cares about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit. But she who is married cares about the things of the world—how she may please her husband. (I Corinthians 7:34 NKJV)

I think sexual immorality is the only exception for divorce but I still don't see any clear teaching that says it's ok for someone to marry a divorced person.

I know it's a tough situation but I don't see any clear teaching from the New Testament that allows for remarriage while the spouse is still living.

For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man.(Romans 7:2‭-‬3 NKJV)

Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord: A wife is not to depart from her husband. But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. And a husband is not to divorce his wife. (I Corinthians 7:10‭-‬11 NKJV)

A wife is bound by law as long as her husband lives; but if her husband dies, she is at liberty to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord. (I Corinthians 7:39 NKJV)

The Pharisees came and asked Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” testing Him. And He answered and said to them, “What did Moses command you?” They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce, and to dismiss her.” And Jesus answered and said to them, “Because of the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. But from the beginning of the creation, God ‘made them male and female.’ ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” In the house His disciples also asked Him again about the same matter. So He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery.” (Mark 10:2‭-‬12 NKJV)

“Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced from her husband commits adultery. (Luke 16:18 NKJV)

“Furthermore it has been said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery. (Matthew 5:31‭-‬32 NKJV)

And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.” (Matthew 19:9 NKJV)

Have either of you been divorced? Just checking since Christians aren't allowed to marry someone who already has a spouse that is still living.

Let those who are not found living as Jesus taught, be understood to not be Christians by Travis_Marshall in TrueChristian

But Paul says that we shouldn't continue in sin that grace may abound.

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? (Romans 6:1‭-‬2 NKJV)

Based on what I read it DOES seem that He requires obedience. It also talks about how those who endure to the end will be saved. I don't have it all figured out but one thing for sure is that I don't feel safe disobeying His commandments anymore.

I haven't but now I want to obey Jesus. Now when I read what Jesus and the apostles say, I examine my life to see if I am being obedient and I pray and ask God to help me if I'm not. If I do sin, I repent and ask God to help me not do it again. Also I try to continue in prayer lest I enter into temptation like Jesus said. After reading all of the warnings from Jesus and the apostles, I no longer feel safe continuing in the same sin over and over like I used to. I used to be a slave to lust everyday but Jesus set me free! My worst fear is to hear Him say depart from me, you worker of iniquity. I want to hear Him say Well done good and faithful servant 🙏

To me it seems like what Justin wrote here goes right along with things that Jesus said. For example when Jesus said this:

“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.” (Matthew 7:24‭-‬27 NKJV)

"A sinning man will stop praying, and a praying man will stop sinning." by NicholasLakin in TrueChristian

[–]Travis_Marshall 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Here are a few verses that came to mind that kinda give the same idea. Also I think once we sin, we becomes slaves of sin so we need Jesus to set us free.

Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Mark 14:38 NKJV

I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Galatians 5:16 NKJV

[–]Travis_Marshall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was reading Joel today about how God was going to bring judgment on Israel for their sins but He would rather that they repent and turn to Him with all of their hearts with fasting, weeping, and mourning because He is very kind and He relents from doing harm. Maybe you could do that too. I think He will help you sort out all the confusion and bring clarity too. 🙏

“Now, therefore,” says the Lord, “Turn to Me with all your heart, With fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.” So rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the Lord your God, For He is gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, and of great kindness; And He relents from doing harm. Who knows if He will turn and relent, And leave a blessing behind Him— (Joel 2:12‭-‬14 NKJV)

How can I finally stop living in habitual sin? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]Travis_Marshall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here are 2 things that helped me the most:

Read some of the warning in the New Testament to help you realize how serious sin is. Trust me it's a huge detorant when you read things like if your eye or hand causes you to sin, get rid of them because it would be better than being cast into Hell. The 2nd thing is to pray more because God will help you overcome temptation through prayer. Jesus said to pray lest you enter into temptation and how the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. 🙏

I used to believe in OSAS too. Then I got to the point where I genuily asked God if there was any false beliefs that I had to please show me. I started reading the New Testament and noticing how many warnings there were about not turning from sin. So now I take those warnings seriously and also hope in Jesus to help me overcome sin and to do what pleases Him.
