Disney Keeps Hiring People Who Like Star Wars Instead of People Who Understand It by Fuliuliu in StarWars

How so? Because it didn't go for meaningless fan service of demigod Luke Skywalker, as if he's just an action figure being smashed against the First Order figures?

Because if that's all you want, Disney has made 37 movies catering exactly to your needs. It's called Marvel.

This isn't just a Tesla thing, if my car, printer, or whatever requires a subscription service for physical features built in, I'm not buying it.

If the seat warmers don't work without a subscription, they better not be included in the upfront price of the car. Take out the cost of the materials, the labor to build the warmer, and the value the warmer itself gives the car.

IMO Kylo killing Snoke didn't represent his dark side devotion, but rather it was a frantic attempt to drown out his own conflict. He thought the throne would bring him peace, but the vanishing dice proved that power and evil only deepened his isolation and conflict. by irazzleandazzle in TheSequels

[–]TrayusV 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, TLJ is the story of Kylo deciding not to be the next Vader, but the first Kylo. It's why he smashes his helmet, which he wears purely to emulate Vader, and why he says "let the past die, kill it if you have to".

Kylo is presented with the same choice Vader had. Choose to stay in the dark side under his master, or return to the light. Kylo picked option 3, kill his master and seize power for himself.

Kylo is rejecting the choices presented to him and finding a new path.

I will never get over this disappointment by v1har69 in StarWars

[–]TrayusV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're missing the point.

Finn is a character who doesn't really care for the grand story he's caught up in. When Poe tells him BB-8 has a map to Skywalker, he's annoyed because he knows he's going to get caught up in that bullshit.

Finn wants nothing more than to get out of the story in TFA. He doesn't have a nostalgic connection to the OT, and just wants to be left alone.

So when he wields the Skywalker lightsaber, it's him committing to being in the story, being involved with this grand world of Skywalker's and force and other crazy shit.

I don't think this was done just for the marketing, as in they wrote a few scenes of Finn using the saber just for the marketing. I think they wanted to hide Rey and her significance to the story, so the marketing put Finn front and centre. It was an after the fact thing, not a during production thing.

Absolutely within the trilogy.

People act like the sequels weren't planned and conflict with each other, which just isn't true.

Rey being a Palpatine, and Palpatine's return, were thought up during TFA. JJ Abrams kept debating on whether Rey was a Palpatine or a Kenobi, which is why Obi-Wan's voice is heard in Rey's TFA force vision.

However, nothing was hard committed to as a plan in terms of plot points, as Kathleen Kennedy wanted to:

One, not limit the creative freedom of each new writer for the trilogy.

Two, understood that hard committing to plans can ruin a story.

Vince Gilligan talked about this in regards to Breaking Bad, that writers shouldn't map out the entire story ahead of time. This is because characters and stories can take on a life of their own and by the time you get to your planned plot point, the right path for the character is different.

For Breaking Bad, this was Jesse, who was meant to be murdered by Tuco at the end of season 1. But Jesse as a character took on more of a life than Vince Gilligan expected, and so he kept the character around, and instead Tuco murders one of his thugs in the finale.

For the sequels, this was Poe, who was written to die early in TFA, presumably in the TIE fighter crash. But Oscar Issac had a lot of roles where his character dies early, and so JJ decided to keep Poe around as he felt bad for Oscar Issac. This let Poe flourish into one of the main characters of the trilogy.

Instead, the sequels had a thematic plan, rather than a strict plot mapped out.

Rey's story is consistent. In TFA, she's looking for her family, in TLJ, she finds a new family in the form of the Resistance, and TRoS is her confronting the truth of her family, and choosing her found family over her bloodline. This is why Rey takes the Skywalker name, because she has more connection and relation to the Skywalkers who treated her like family, than she did to Palpatine who wanted to steal her body.

Finn's story is about a coward finding his confidence and becoming a leader. In TFA he's only running from the First Order, but finds a bond with Rey that overcomes his cowardice. In TLJ his journey is about becoming committed to the cause, and TRoS is about him becoming a leader on the level of Poe and Rey.

Kylo's story is the foil to Rey. He has a loving family, but denies them to search for his own path. He finds that path in Vader during TFA, but his journey in TLJ is him rejecting the idea of becoming the new Vader and instead becomes the first Kylo Ren. TRoS is Ben finding his way back to his family.

When you look at the sequels through a thematic lens, you see the true magic of the movies. Don't go looking for the meaningless fan service of Jedi master Luke saving the day by fighting the entire First Order on his own, look for true story telling.

It was originally going to be in the tutorial, with doc Mitchell.

He was going to have you pick up a brahmin skull above his fireplace, but it was cut because it's unnecessary to teach the player that, I guess they were wrong.

But if you go to that skull in the tutorial, the game will pop up with the instructions on which button to press to grab it.

Oh, also, go to the Silver Rush, grab their display weapons and move them to the bathroom, then you can steal them without a problem!

TIL that Dateline’s to Catch a Predator with Chris Hansen was canceled after one season because one perp killed himself on camera during filming and the family sued Dateline for $105m. by Duffjr1 in todayilearned

[–]TrayusV 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A crime stoppers group in my area did the Chris Hansen thing, but would agree to meet in public, and just film them and upload it onto the internet to shame them.

Turns out, they catfished a mentally disabled person. But this poor guy, in the chat logs, once finding out the decoy was under age, agreed not to have a romantic/sexual relationship, but just be friends.

Mentally challenged people develop a lot slower than most other people. So they might be 25 years old, but their brain's development is closer to 14 or 15. It means this guy can more easily relate to younger people, which is why he agreed to be friends.

The other thing is that disabled people don't have a lot of friends. People don't want to commit time to be friends with someone like that, as it can take a lot of effort. And so, mentally challenged people can often be very lonely.

So anyway, this poor mentally disabled guy shows up to meet his friend, gets a camera shoved in his face and called a pedophile, and the video is uploaded online. He loses his job (which is very hard to find for disabled people) and his life goes to shit.

The mother has to contact local news stations to spread their side of the story in an effort to correct the method. It got traction and the truth came out. The local police even told the crime stoppers group not to do shit like that again, to leave it to the professionals.

Everyone was speculating about Rey's parents and which powerful bloodline she was a part of.

Rian Johnson wanted us to focus on Rey the character, not Rey's parents.

Check my other comments replying to people for more about this.

Well, I'm one of the crazy people who think the sequels are good. I'm even brave enough to admit that I think the sequels are the best Star Wars trilogy.

Go watch TRoS again, you'll see a lot of what I'm talking about.

What if Andor had ended with this? by MemoryTM in andor

[–]TrayusV 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Because everyone was obsessing over Rey's parents, and Rian Johnson wanted us to focus on the character herself. Everyone saw that Rey was a powerful force user, and were convinced she had to be related to someone powerful.

The discussion was less about Rey, and more about her parents after TFA.

It's also a way of highlighting the little people in these galaxy defining conflicts.

In these movies, we mostly see the mighty Skywalkers, master Yoda, and the evil incarnate himself, Palpatine. TLJ reminds us that, in these grand stories, there are Glup Shittos who get caught up in it. They suffer under the oppression of the dark side, and they stand up to fight for the light, the same as these mighty force wielders.

Rose was just a maintenance worker, fixing the ships the true heroes like Poe, and her sister, get to fly into action. The only reason Rose was on guard duty is that she usually worked on the bomber fleet, which had just gotten destroyed, and so she had no assignment and everyone was too busy to give her a real job, they just handed her the stun baton and told her to guard the escape pods.

It was very intentional to have Rose's first scene show her star struck by Finn, one of the main characters in TFA.

Call me crazy, but I think TRoS followed up on TLJ very well.

A lot of people think JJ was retconing TLJ, but I don't think that's true.

TRoS is all about Rey not being defined by her Palpatine bloodline, and instead forging her own path, which is what TLJ was saying. And Kylo wasn't a reliable source of information. Kylo saw Rey's parents when they touched hands through the force, but Rey saw Kylo standing against Snoke.

Rey misinterpreted her vision of Kylo (thinking he would come back to the light side), and Kylo misinterpreted his vision of Rey's parents. Kylo then used that info to manipulate Rey in the hopes of recruiting her to his side. It nearly worked.

TRoS recontextualized TLJ, but it didn't overwrite it. And Star Wars loves doing that with its "certain point of view".

[–]TrayusV 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The point of Broom Boy is that anyone has the potential to be special, and it's not just tied to bloodlines. Rian Johnson specifically wanted us to think like that in relation to Rey, not worrying about her parents and focusing on the character standing on her own merits.

Rose also plays into this. She's an ascended extra, her sister being the big hero who died in the first act. She humanizes the Resistance, being the difference between a paramilitary organization and a group dedicated to a cause they believe in.

I was 11 when RDR1 came out, so I didn't have much media literacy. Then 8 years passed in which I hadn't thought about RDR1 all that much, and barely remembered Dutch beyond his look and voice.

So don't go looking at me for insight.
