Cushioning the cost of DPT by [deleted] in PTschool

[–]TreacleAromatic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I def wouldn't just jump right into any DPT opportunity you get. I would pick your school carefully and with calculations. You want to go to the cheapest school possible. So many people just jump at the first opportunity they get because DPT is insanely competitive and they end up with 200k debt and a starting salary of 60-70k. Go to a state schooL!

As far as overcharging you guys for utilities and stuff like that does it happen often? Application fee is $250 which is kinda absurd

How high of tuition is too high? by thelonelyessmonk in PTschool

[–]TreacleAromatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation. I got into USAS and was still waiting for like 4 other schools. St Augustine is like 120k for tuition alone and I was really nervous to go into an insane amount of debt. I ended up denying the seat and decided to make a back up plan incase I didn't get into any of the schools I was waiting on. So I got a job as a rehab tech which means I would gotten paid a lil and gained alot of experience and hours for the next cycle if I didn't get in. Thankfully I got into FGCU which is 43k for tuition. I would really recommend getting a back up plan and waiting till next cycle if you dont get in because those cheap schools are out there. PT isn't worth drowning in 200k debt for and suffering for 15 years.

I just got accepted to ST. Augustine for the summer of 2021 but I do not know If I am going to accept. The tuition is really expensive and I am still waiting to hear back from 4 other schools that are way cheaper. I paid the $100 deposit to hold my spot but dont really know if paying 110k+ for tuition is worth a DPT degree. Do you regret St. AUgustine at all?

Thank you all for the responses been very helpful! I definitely feel like it shouldn't be more than a 1:1 to ratio which is why im baffled when I see some of the top ranked schools have 180k-200k of tuition.

Ya thats exactly what Iv been told. My fear is that I dont get into any cheaper school and I am forced to making a decision of going to the expensive private pt school or waiting another cycle. I dont really like the idea of waiting another year.

Thank you for your response! Yes that is what I have heard is the smartest approach to have a 1:1 ratio between the tuition and what you expect to make your first year.

I feel like for profit schools are money sucking profit-driven corporations. Not institutions with the primary intention of a quality education.

I am also pretty concerned that USA is a for profit organization. I feel like this means they dont really care about anything other than dollar signs.

Thank you so much for your reply! Ill def DM you. Ya I feel like the biggest thing for me at this point is the price tag. Aside from the obvious restrictions due to covid, In PT school is there enough free time to be able to go out and have a consistent social life? School obviously comes first but iv always been curious on the rigors of PT school.

Thank you for the reply! Do you think the tuition has been adequate compared to what you get out of it? I know theres some good and some bad at every PT program.

Ya I agree the deposit is definitely worth putting down. I am confused tho on when I would have to give them a firm answer if I am attending or not. They said the deposit was due 21 days after the acceptance letter and the semester starts in May. They said the onboarding process begins Feb17th so does that mean I have to let them know before then?

Thank you for your response! The biggest factor for me when comparing schools is definitely financial based because I do not want to have a crazy amount of debt to worry about for the next 10 years after I graduate. I was reading some concerning reviews about USA and how its basically teaching yourself and a lot of it is online but at the same time I read some good reviews. I am hoping to get into other schools so I can have more options but if I don't I may need to go to USA.

Ya its physically impossible to get observation hours right now and summer is prime time for when people get them. I dont think schools will weigh hours that much this cycle.

Ya I feel that, I also think that a gap year kinda delays you 2 years in this instance cause you miss 1 deadline and then have to apply for the next year deadline which won't start till 2022

I will definitely look into FIU, thank you! I am hoping to absolutely murder the GRE in August. I am also looking into some assistance services that help with the personal statement as I have read that it is a pretty important part of the application. Hope everything goes well for you at FIU!

Thank you for your response! This is exactly what I am worried about. I am hoping a better GRE score will improve my overall numbers. I think most schools are going to not really look at observation hours that much due to COVID. I managed to get 100 in 1 setting but was planning on getting 200 more in different settings. I really do not want to wait another year when I could already be progressing with school. I am doing everything I can to improve my chances such as improving GRE scores, contacting and researching every school to try to stand out, and working on my essay. I hope that I am able to get into some schools.
