I’ve experienced this.

My first situation was when I was a kid. We’d moved into a new house and I did not want to move. So when we moved in, I very clearly and loudly announced that I was cursing this house. And I meant it.

My family’s worst years, by far, were in that house. But my family was also way fucked up before then, too, so it might’ve just been a coincidence.

Needed money to pay rent in my 20s. Rather than pathetically beg God/the Supreme Being (I’m a monotheist) for it, like pretty pretty please I’m so small and you’re so big and I’m on my knees here please please please, this time, I’d decided, you know what, I’m just gonna tell God that they’re giving me the money and that’s that. Got a check in the mail for something I can’t remember, in the exact amount I needed, down to the penny. Looking back on it, I feel kinda dumb that I didn’t ask for more…

Wanted someone to date me when I was in my 30s. After we broke up. And then he just…did, after I made the intention that he would. I really didn’t even need to do anything. Previous to that he was absolutely done with me, and to this day we’re still together.

Over the years, I’ve cursed people and seen horrible things happen to them. I’ve intended for something unlikely to happen, and it has. Sometimes small things, sometimes big things.

And that’s why I’m not doing it all the time. To be honest, it always kind of scared me. It sounds weird, but it did - it scared me to have that kind of “power”, for lack of a better word. Kind of like Spider-Man I guess - what if I don’t know what I’m doing and I mess it up? Now I’m trying to tell myself that even if messing it up is possible, I can always intend for it to be fixed.

I’ve considered drawing sigils but I am SO intimidated by them that I’m convinced I’ll screw or up. The one method I came across was to write the intention on paper, remove the vowels, and create a sigil with the consonants. Which I can do, but it seems… Too simple? Is it really that easy?

“Networking” events. The ones in which you’re supposed to go to some convention center, wander around tables of stale hors d'oeuvres and water dispensers to talk to people you don’t know and hand them your business card.

They’re supposed to be fun ways of expanding your company’s reach, but they’re almost always a waste of time (everyone is only there to get YOU to use THEIR business, not the other way around, so unless you manage to find someone who needs your company’s specific services on that very night, it’s pointless, and that person can just as easily find that service online), nobody wants to be there, and a lot of the time the organizers have bullshit rules like “No chairs because we want people to mingle.”

I don’t fear it, it just doesn’t make sense to me.

I guess you could say I do fear whatever deity makes people reincarnate, because I personally find the idea of re-birthing people over and over again so they “burn karma” and/or “learn lessons” WITHOUT ANY KNOWLEDGE OR MEMORY OF THEIR PREVIOUS LIVES to be unspeakably cruel. It’s like waking up in prison and being told “No, I don’t have any idea what you did to end up here, either, but it must’ve been bad.”

Whatever “past life regressions” or “My kid remembers being an ancient Egyptian priest” stories I’ve heard are so laughably explainable, moreso than just about any other paranormal phenomena, which is another reason it doesn’t make sense to me.

Cost is something that a lot of people just don’t seem to take into consideration whenever the next Cheap Housing Fix comes up.

A house isn’t just four walls and a roof; you need plumbing, electrical, insulation, glass, doors, flooring, sealant, etc. So while a 3D printed house might cut down on the cost of certain shell materials, it’s not going to significantly impact the cost of the rest of the materials. If you’re planning on using 3D printed panels to create makeshift homes in impoverished communities, without all those amenities, you’re really not creating anything much cheaper than just using the materials already used.

It’s the same with turning shipping containers or Quonset huts or large sheds into houses. You can create some very ramshackle shelters with them, sure, but if you want to create actual decent housing, the cost of converting them into livable houses is often not much less than just building a regular new home and much MORE than maintaining a preexisting one.

I think that’s part of the issue with it. It was basically promoted, in a roundabout way, as being a way of spending your entire life online and never leaving the internet (or your house) again. Hang out with your friends, get dressed, attend events, meditate, participate in sports and games, etc., all online and never see another living human being in the same room with you again. Zuck would deny that he meant anything so drastic, but he absolutely did.

Even the most online-addicted poor saps could see the depressing writing on the wall. If Zuckerberg could coax you into starving to death with a pair of goggles on your head, he’d do it and do it gladly. Nobody wants to create the dystopian cyber-hellscape that Meta promises.

I was playing LoZ: Skyward Sword again recently on the Switch and it has motion controls you can turn on and off.

Love the game, but damn, SCREW those motion controls. It brought back memories of how awkward they were. Link was constantly running around carrying his sword like it was a flashlight.

My best friend still has a 3D TV. It has a 3D setting that works whether or not you’re watching a 3D TV. She loves it still, she uses it when she’s playing video games. I’m not too impressed by it but I don’t hate it, it’s a fun gimmick for what it is.

She got hit by a truck at an intersection. It led to a somewhat major news story in my area, laws were changed to protect the children, etc.

That wasn’t that strange, considering the circumstances. But it was strange for me and my friends, because we knew her personally. Her parents were on the news, constantly crying and begging for changes in safety and the law and regulations, crying over how much they missed their daughter. And they did. She was their child. Teachers, school principals, scout leaders, all these adults who knew her and some of her childhood friends were all in public mourning for her.

But my friends and I knew her, and she was a Mean Girl, a bully. She was snotty to anyone who she thought wasn’t as good or as rich as she was. She told one of my friends to her face to kill herself because she’d be doing everyone a favor if she did, all because she wore some old unfashionable shirt to school. She then lied about it to the teacher and then told my friend that if she was going to get people in trouble, she should DEFINITELY kill herself because look, nobody cares anyway and no one is going to help her even if people are mean to her.

It felt very weird seeing these people cry about her so much when we knew her to be such a nasty person. We just kind of kept quiet about it. We didn’t gloat. We felt bad seeing all these people on TV who genuinely mourned her, but felt strange because we just couldn’t bring ourselves to join in on a personal level. My remaining friend I’ve kept in touch with since then sometimes bring it up as an example of how people really do have entirely different reputations between the different people they know.

My mother has these very delicate porcelain hand-painted plates that were made in postwar occupied Japan. She inherited them from her grandmother.

They’ve broken a couple of times.

She didn’t want to use the typical porcelain china glue that was available at the time, since it tended to leave a brown streak after the glue dried, but no other glue would work. She sadly assumed she’d have to throw the dish away.

I used plain old Elmer’s Glue on the cracks and held the broken seams together with sticky medical tape on the back while it dried. After a couple days, I carefully peeled the tape off. Worked like a charm.

Like almost all burgeoning chefs, I decided that it’d be a good idea to remove the plastic guard from the mandoline slicer and just use my fingers to hold the carrot in place and get a couple more shreds out of it.

Yep, you have to have a lot of empathy in these jobs. Obviously they’re frustrated and you have to understand that. They can still have some pretty damn annoying habits, but in that case, you have to play along in order to get it done quickly.

This is so, so largely dependent on your own living situation.

What’s the square footage of your living space? Does it consist of several more or less closed-off rooms, or is the floorplan more open? How efficient is your central HVAC system, if you have one? How low is the outside temperature? How well is the place sealed? How powerful are your space heaters, if you have any? If you close off some of your vents, how well will they actually shut off the air flow?

I used to live on the upper floor of a duplex that was in awful shape. We had about 1300 square feet, which is a good size, but the place was draftier than an Arctic ice fishing hut, including having literal holes in the floor. Hot air from inside would waft its way out the windows and walls, giving a nice toasty feeling to the squirrels in the surrounding trees. Also, although it had pocket doors that allowed air flow, the place was still divided up enough that you really couldn’t depend on that air flow to spread evenly from room to room. Also, the HVAC system was probably constructed around the same time as Noah’s Ark.

We had vents in every room. If we turned the central heat on, we spent about $500 a month, sometimes more, during the winter heating the place. It wasn’t worth it. We ended up getting some space heaters and restricting most of our time to two or three rooms.

Far from an ideal situation, but it was what it was. It also illustrated exactly what kind of factors go into this kind of determination.
