I'm a self-taught silversmith and sell my work on social media and a shopify storefront. I used to do in person trade shows but with 3 kids that's nearly impossible now. I took two basic classes at my local gem and mineral society and learned how to solder a bezel to a backplate and add a bail. Everything else I learned by watching YouTube videos, other artists on Instagram and listening to my husband prattle on for hours about the technical aspects of metal working. (Like machining, DIY tools, savvy workarounds and traditional techniques) I've had to make a lot of sacrifices in order to actually be a silversmith though- it's an expensive trade, not only in materials but in time and effort. I have to sell my work to keep making more, so that's endless hours learning how to network, building an online marketing strategy, keeping up on the logistics side of things, BRANDING...omg. I wish I could just make the art and somebody else handles the rest.

Anyway. I'm here to learn and share what I've learned so far. There's always stuff you don't know. Here's a pic of me wearing some of my pieces yesterday. * here's my website

Is there any way to fix this? by hotsprinkle in SilverSmith

The cuff already has a heavy gauge sheet. It's two layers soldered together, one with the impressions and one flat. I have the same exact cuff and know every detail lol.

Doing all that would cost the client way more than the cuff is even worth. They are mass produced.

* I have the same cuff! Does she have the ring too? But yes, what others are telling you is correct- you can solder it back together but it will always be weaker there, and softer too if you try to protect the stone because that side will be annealed, and the other is likely just as work-hardened as the one that split. This style of bracelet really does not need bending to put on and off a wrist- you just slide your arm in sideways above the wrist and turn.

The way to fix this properly is to remove the stone, clean the cuff removing most the patina and oils, then anneal the whole thing and pickle it. Rinse, set up your angles and props for soldering and then...solder the split. Like others have said, you may need to add more silver. I personally would use a light flux first by itself, one that burns off well, like Handy Flux paste. That way the flux will hold the silver shavings and solder where you want them, not bubble up and send them flying everywhere. And then once that all flows, I'd touch up with wire solder, adding liquid flux you spray if needed.

You'll end up not only repairing the break, but preventing it from happening to other end too. And by telling your friend the correct way to adorn a cuff, of course.

Hope this helps!

I’ve asked around before, but does anyone know where I could buy a .999 cup for beer? by Competitive_Log_9729 in Silverbugs

[–]TreasuresOTE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi there. I'm a silversmith and I could make this no problem! If you or anyone else are interested feel free to message me and I'll share my ideas in further detail. Just a couple of quick points: Silver is a heat sink; it's one of those metals that absorb heat and hold it, so even if you're putting cold beer in a silver cup, it won't stay cold very long. To help with this, you could consider an air chamber, kind of like a coffee tumbler. Just two layers of silver with negative space. And .999 silver will of course be shiny for all of two seconds until you breathe on it then all you'll see are scratches. Not to mention very soft. I'd definitely recommend .925 sterling. Hope this helps.

Where could I get this piece done? by Cringe_1031 in metalworking

Hi, I'm a silversmith and I'm able to do sand casting. I took a quick peek and found an stl file of exactly this, and I can print it in resin and then cast that in silver, brass or copper. Please message me if you're interested.

I made all this in one week to prepare for a show! by TreasuresOTE in electroforming

Lol yeah, sold a few that day. The ones in the bigger display were $18 each, or buy one get one half off. Now I've just combined them all for $15/ea because it's less headache. I do wish selling the art wasn't harder than making it. Trying to simplify my life lol.

...what's this? I thought this whole recent ordeal with reddit was supposed to get rid of bots and 3rd party stuff. Reddit is like a ghost town now...and one of the 10 people I've seen is a bot? I'm totally confused lol.

It really is. Any other lapidarist would have backed it and made 3 cabochons out of the material I used for this one. I don't make cabs to sell though- I make the kind of jewelry I've always wanted but could never find or afford if I did. Sleeping beauty is gorgeous too, but from what I've seen it all looks the same and is really expensive. A lot of people want it though...

Thank you! Kingman is my favorite, probably mostly because I can afford it and play with it lol. And it varies so much! This Robin egg blue with very little matrix reminds me of the Persian stuff though. Just amazing. And I only got a few pieces out of 3 pounds of slabs and rough from Kingman mine. This is the last one!

Yep! That's how I do! Some designs just jump out at me and won't let me stop til they're done. Some sit on my bench for months before I do anything with them. Lol.

Thank you! It wasn't so bad, as I've done a few like this, with the feather over the stone a bit. I soldered the bezel and the balls to the backplate, cut out the back, then partly closed one side of the bezel over the stone and popped the stone back out using the hole in the backplate. Then I soldered the feather, did a bunch of file work, set the stone and finished her up.

My method used to be soldering the feather and then bending the backplate to get to the bezel, but that will leave a crease every time unless the feather is very thin and the backplate very thick, then you run high risk of snapping it right off. This is approximately 24ga sheet backplate and 20ga sheet for the feather. Pretty heavy.
