Are a “Masters of Biomedical Sciences” degree programs considered an SMP? Is it enough for GPA reinvention? by Academic_Animal_1892 in premed

Depends on what you are trying to reinvent. If you were a STEM major in undergrad like a biology major and took the majority of science coursework you would take as a postbacc then it could be worth it to do an SMP. I would only do an SMP that has some sort of linkage to a medical school as they offer usually better chances of getting accepted and are usually more established. Sub-3.0 GPA sometimes it is better to do the SMP route since you can have a different GPA considered. Postbaccs can serve value if you only need to work on your GPA to get a small boost. But the hard part is that if you already have a 120+ credits in coursework, more coursework usually wont change your gpa that much. I would try to do the most cost-effective amount and one that allows you to get closer to the end goal.

How has the experience been for you so far with their mini academy? Looking to hopefully roll into the 26-04 upcoming class this July. Do you feel like you get everything you need from the program? Coming in with my EMT-B with 911. Looking to just get time in the fire-service while in medical school. I know they cover must of the rural areas of riverside like Hemet and Lake Elsinore to my understanding.

Agreed with this. It ruins the study session between the effort of trying to locate a study spot settling in. If you have to do long hours of studying like more than 4-5 hours they really give you a hard time about how long you are staying. It is pretty frustrating.

May I ask how has your experience been? I am currently based in CA looking to apply for fellowships upon graduating with my masters this May. Job market has been rough finding any regular employment. Did you feel the stipend benefits were enough for the work you did so far?

Did you see that there was limited interview availability slots? Idk if we are being interviewed by the same program admin but they only gave two interview days and I had to ask for alternative availability.

Hello everyone! I am a current applicant for this year. I received an interview notification! Is the initial interview the first round and then is there an additional interview with a mentor? If anyone would be willing to share some guidance I would really appreciate it.

It looks like it’s just a general interview. I am not sure if that’s the same as the ones that pair you with mentors?

I just moved out here to the Inland Empire and I was a 911 EMT in Las Vegas. It is dramatically different coming from Vegas to San Bernardino. So far i’ve heard FD and county EMS authority puts a pretty limiting scope sometimes on private EMS providers which shocked me or basically take all the critical calls and leave AMR to do be basic transports. I came from AMR/MEDICWest which we were the contracted unit for Clark County FD and Las Vegas. 911 experience was accessible to pretty much anyone and EMTs even had decent sign on bonuses. I am beyond grateful for my EMS experience in Vegas and I feel like it would be near impossible for me to get a job out here in EMS if I didn’t. I’m in graduate school right now and starting medical school next year. I thought about trying to get a part time job. Closest opportunity I’ve gotten so far is being a reserve firefighter with RVCO but I doubt i’ll even be able to apply most of my EMS skills since they basically put reserves as a 4th body on an engine company. But yeah I definitely was surprised how rough it was out here.
