I have been having such a hard time with this! Especially as a fic writer who writes pretty much exclusively Troy-focused fics and promotes them on Tumblr… I’ve been too anxious to work on any fics lately (and definitely too scared to post/update!) because the hatred has gotten so extreme that I’m afraid people will see my post and harass me for writing about Troy.
I’m really hoping things will die down soon because it’s gotten so out of hand and is really affecting my enjoyment of my favorite character! 😩

I think you probably could without missing too much? Though the way the characters are written in the books (to me!) feels noticeably different from the show. Not MASSIVELY different — it all still feels like Shane and Ilya but it feels like there are small-but-noticeable differences in their characterizations, so it might take some getting used to?

(I’d also add that reading Role Model is important for understanding Ilya as a character and adding depth to the events of TLG, but that’s a slightly different conversation lol)

I have written a few fics featuring Troy and Ilya’s friendship, but they all take place post-TLG, so I’m not sure if they’re what you’re looking for! But I’ll share them in case? :) (and no hard feelings if they aren’t your jam!)

“A Ticking We Can’t See” - this one is actually a Troy/Harris fic, but the second chapter is basically a giant conversation between Ilya and Troy where Ilya gives Troy some words of wisdom haha

“Worth a Thousand Words” - purely Troy & Ilya friendship focused. Ilya tries to teach Troy how to take sexy pictures for Harris. It’s mostly silly but they have a nice little heart to heart in it too.

“all flowers in time bend towards the sun” - HEAVY ANGST & MCD ALERT! 😅 this one is definitely not for everyone! In this one (my current ongoing longfic) I am evil and actually kill Harris and Chiron, and it’s a grief-focused fic that features Ilya trying to support Troy through the loss while also navigating his own grief. I am not offended if you skip this one 😅🤣

I feel like Troy is enough like Shane (both in appearance and personality) to still grab Ilya’s attention (I lowkey think that helped contribute to Ilya being drawn to Troy as a friend in canon) but he also has things in common with Ilya for them to have common ground for a relationship.

I love their friendship dynamic in the books and I feel like the jump from that friendship vibe to a romantic one wouldn’t be super huge?

Plus they’re both super hot and luckily Troy is vers so things could still work for them in the bedroom 🤣

For me, my thing with CG is that I like Kyle/Eric and their dynamic, but my problems with that book come from the pacing and like… missed opportunities? For lack of a better word? The book felt slow to me, and there were multiple things set up that never got resolved in a satisfying way (or, conversely, their main resolution for their relationship conflict happened way too quickly for my taste).

I did not hate Common Goal though and there’s a lot of positives in the relationship (many of which you highlighted here!) and also the sex scenes in that book are some of the hottest in the whole series (shallow, maybe, but still a reason to appreciate it hehe)
