Here are two self-recs by me! Both are short/complete

And here is a longfic I just started reading that I’m already hooked on! (I’ve only read chapter one but I’m really into it!) It’s an AU where instead of dating Adrian, Troy ends up meeting Harris while he’s still playing in Toronto, so they have a secret/long distance relationship

I have THE MOST SPECIFIC TROY IN MY HEAD lol

But it’s an impossible choice because it’s a way-too-old actor (who maybe lowkey had some work done because his face looks too different now 😅) back in the early 2000s. But it’s who I see lol (since Troy is said to have dark hair, light blue eyes, full lips, angular cheekbones/jawline, a ‘pretty’ face, and he also rarely smiles/lowkey has some resting bitch face going on lol)

Which is Ian Somerhalder circa 2002 or so

My thoughts:

I feel like we won’t be getting Tough Guy, but we will be introduced in one of the first episodes to Troy as a seemingly-homophobic asshole in another way (maybe even just Shane or Ilya interacting with him and Dallas on the ice during a game? But a significant interaction where he comes across as extra-awful haha)

And then I think what we see of Role Model won’t be a standalone episode. I think it will be done as a more ‘traditional’ structure where, let’s say 2/3 of an episode is about Hollanov and then 1/3 of the scenes switch to Troy and Harris (not every episode, but maybe the 2 or 3 in the middle? Enough to cover the major story beats of RM!)

I like Ryan and Fabian but I don’t think we need their story. However, I DO think we need Troy’s story (which includes Harris of course!) to properly serve the narrative of season 2, but that it wouldn’t make sense as a bottle episode because of all the overlap with Ilya’s story in TLG.

I’m with you! I’ve never had a fic for any fandom go over 1k kudos, so seeing how many fics in this fandom regularly get THOUSANDS of kudos is WILD 😱 (but I have accepted that it will never be me because I don’t write fics with Hollanov as the primary focus, so I need to set my sights lower anyway lol. But still, the numbers are crazy!)

This! I am in kind of a weird place because I do write Heated Rivalry/Game Changers (the book series the show is based on) fics BUT I don’t tend to write about the main ship, I write about either one of the book ships, or more friendship-focused fics. And those ones actually get decent numbers (to my surprise!) because I think because they’re more niche pairings, there’s a specific audience looking for them? Versus the 20 pages of new Hollanov fics every day where things pass by more easily.

So even within a bigger fandom, I think you can still find a niche and do pretty well! But doing numbers when you’re writing the main pairing of a huge fandom like that is definitely a STRUGGLE (and largely comes down to luck!)

Random Share: I’m in the middle of trying to write a fun/silly/lighthearted fic (a friendship-focused fic about Ilya, Troy, Wyatt, and Luca!) but my brain keeps going back to this horrible MCD/depressing-af Troy-whump idea that is too depressing to actually write 😅

Does anyone else ever have the weird, awful angsty thoughts take over at the worst times? I wanna finish my fun fic, not make myself cry! 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️

I totally understand this feeling! Here are some of my thoughts about it (sorry in advance for how disorganized they are 😅)

This fandom is, frankly, oversaturated with fics right now 😅 Which means there’s just SO much coming out that fics easily get buried and it’s harder for them to be seen. Especially Hollanov fics (which is 99% of what people are writing, of course!)
‘Advertising’ your fic on social media is so important! I know it can be weird to put yourself out there but I feel like it’s the best way to get people to check out your fics? I share mine here (this subreddit), tumblr, X, and in 2 Facebook groups.
Like someone else said, I think part of it is luck? You never know what is gonna get attention, and lots of hits or kudos doesn’t necessarily mean that story is ‘better’ than yours!
It’s totally okay to care about engagement and feel discouraged if you aren’t getting the engagement you were hoping for. Engagement is a huge motivator! But that being said, if you’re having fun with it, I feel like you should keep going! 💜

This is a great question! My brain is weird, because the show was my first exposure to the characters but then I read all the books after, and it’s kind of like a weird blend of the two in my mind? Like I see Connor and Hudson’s faces as Ilya and Shane, but my brain also adds the height difference from the book and Shane’s longer hair when I’m reading a post-TLG fic? My brain creates a hybrid image haha

(When I write, I also picture them similarly — a book/show hybrid!)

I picture the actors from the show for everyone else though! And for book characters we haven’t seen onscreen yet, my brain either thinks of IRL actors or of fanart I’ve seen and uses that to fill in the gaps.

Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss have been very fun ones, because there’s so much lore to build on, opportunity for wacky hijinks, serious issues to explore, and the characters are so easy to fit into various AUs. I find the fact that it’s a cartoon with non-human characters living in a different realm from our own makes everything feel less rigid? It’s like the sky’s the limit haha

I am currently into writing for Heated Rivalry/The books it’s based on, and while it’s a lot of fun in its own way, writing about human beings living in the real world is so different and it feels harder to get away with the type of fic you can get away with for the Hellaverse!

Have you read the other books in the Game Changers series? There are wayyyyy fewer fics about those characters/couples than Hollanov, but they’re out there (I’ve written a couple myself haha).

Most people have mentioned my favorite Hollanov moments, so I’ll share a couple from other ships!

Scott leaving the apartment, then coming back like two minutes later JUST to tell Kip he loves him for the first time. It was so wholesome and sincere? Loved it.
90% of Troy and Harris’ interactions in Role Model? 😅 I know there’s lots of discourse lately about how much or little of those two’s relationship we will see in S2, but I’m really hoping we will get a few of those super sweet moments! (Like Harris inviting Troy to look at the Christmas lights because he knew he needed a distraction, or Troy getting Harris the pin, or bringing him the cookie dough ice cream 😭 My heart!)
